Book Description

InsideScoop May 20, 2003
This manual is designed to provide information to help readers study for and pass CompTIAÂ’s Network+ certification exam. Every effort has been made to make this manual as complete and accurate as possible.

Just reviewing the table of contents, you will see that through BFQPress, I was given the freedom to build on what I have learned from running a Voc Tech school. For example, the chapter numbers are written in Base 2. This wasnÂ’t done to annoy you. The goal is through reinforcement, learn binary math, since that is how much of computing works.

In this release, I teamed up with another alpha geek, and all around "I want all the data" person, Helen OÂ’Boyle. The end result is you will not find another Network+ book with more geekie details, if you need them.

Yet, we donÂ’t make you wade through material. Sections of material have been blocked out so if you donÂ’t want/need to know the details of, for example, how we forced a telco to install a DSL line, great.

Who should NOT buy this book! If you simply looking to make sure you know the material to pass N10-002 (CompTIA Network+) DONÂ’T buy this work. While we have kept the tone as light as possible, a great deal of serious research has been done to demystify obscure details, such as ATM or PPPoE.

If you are already in networking, and donÂ’t want/need a certification/reference/killer idea book, try the Passport to Network+ from BFQPress.

If you are in the game for in-depth understanding, this is this book for you. Helen and Tcat encourage questions from and support the readers of this work. To us, it is another form of Networking, and we look forward to hearing from you.

About the Author

Helen OÂ’Boyle (Network+, MCSE, MCSD, CTT+) has been working with computers for 20 years. Her background is quite varied in regards to both platforms and a complete interest in both the engineering of software and hardware. You may email her at Author@bfqpress.com or Hoboyle@mindspring.com.

Tcat Houser (Network+, MCSE, Server+, CTT+) has garnered other milestones such as IBM PSE and Microsoft MCSE/MCT. This is the result of almost 40 years of "fussing with electronics". When not writing or teaching, he is doing research. Tcat accomplishes so many tasks because to him, it isnÂ’t work, its fun, and he has fun 18 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can reach him by sending mail to Author@bfqpress.com or Tcat@Tcat.net.

Looking back at the last book where I (Tcat Houser) was the lead author (i-Net+ Exam Prep 1576105989) the independent reviews were very good, and most readers understood that I had two intentions. One, ace the test. Two, supply the information to be a reference manual and/or alert the reader to upcoming technologies so as todayÂ’s hero, the reader was not tomorrowÂ’s zero.

In the two years since that release, I led a number of career changers through CompTIA and wrote my own courseware. Building on that learning, you have this release.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sure fire winner and rival to any other study guide., July 9, 2002
This review is from: InsideScoop to CompTIA Certification Network+ N10-002 (with Download Exam) (Paperback)
CompTia release of the new Network+ exam with all new updates has spawned an abundance of books, tests, study guides and training material. What separates the good from the bad is the way the material is presented, the detail and the technical accuracy of the material. This book ranks as one of the best I have seen.

I read the book from cover to cover twice; I was highly impressed by the authors' attention to detail and the amount of information contained within the 750 pages. I found the book to be well edited and found very few technical or grammar errors. The information does indeed exceed the exam objectives making this a very useful tool.

The book has one of the best breakdowns for the OSI model and TCP/IP I have come across. The book has test questions, tips, tricks, diagrams and figures in each chapter. One of things I was most impressed with was the way the information is laid out in a language that just about everyone can understand and comprehend.

Also include in the package I got was subliminal audio cd, this cd I played while working and sleeping and found I was able to retain more information. It may not be for everyone but it does provide another source of study material. Keep in mind it will not replace the book you still need to study and practice.

Finally there is a cd included in the book with the BeachFront Quizzer program and a set of over 200 questions to practice from. About the only 2 drawbacks is that I could find is there should be more questions on the practice cd and the price is a little steep. Aside from that you have an excellent package to work and learn from.

While the book may be a little on the pricey side this should not deter anyone seeking the certification from buying it, I believe the investment is worth it. Overall this is book rivals any other out there today.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does BeachFront have editors?, June 3, 2003

This review is from: InsideScoop to CompTIA Certification Network+ N10-002 (with Download Exam) (Paperback)
I bought this book because it came highly recomended on Amazon and was on sale at the time. This book is filled with type-os and incorrect information. The basic text is okay, though longwinded and uninteresting, but the number of mistakes is unbelieveable. I would have to recomend getting the Exam cram book instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hero becomes Zero., April 26, 2005
This review is from: InsideScoop to CompTIA Certification Network+ N10-002 (with Download Exam) (Paperback)
As the lead author of this work, I must as of the end of April 2005 ask you to NOT to purchase this book, even for free if you are looking to pass Network+. N10-002 is now N10-003 labeled as N10-002. The test has changed enough that this once great work from myself and Helen O'Boyle is no longer a great key to your success.

We're working on N10-003 which IMO, is a even better test. And the going away test was quietly changed and our great work needs to be put out to pasture.

Tcat Houser, 26 April 2005
