At first, I was a little disapointed because I thought the Insiders would be more funny and Gossip Girl-like, but it was still very good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm...
J. Minter's first novel about overprivileged New York rich boys is reminiscent of Von Ziegesar's popular Gossip Girl series. Still, it lacks the zest and spunk of her creations. Whereas I yearn for Gossip Girl's sixth venture into the knowns and unknowns of easy-breezy life, I'm not so psyched for Minter's followup to this debut. The novel chronicles the life of a...

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining enough, December 15, 2004
This review is from: The Insiders (Insiders (Bloomsbury)) (Paperback)
At first, I was a little disapointed because I thought the Insiders would be more funny and Gossip Girl-like, but it was still very good.

The Insiders tells the story of a group of 5 guys who are supposed to be best friends, but find themselves drifting apart and fighting over girls. The main character, Jonathan, seems to be the only one trying to keep them together. They call him the "glue" that holds the group together. Mickey Pardo, the son of a rich art-seller, is the weird and romantic type. His girlfriend's dad doesn't want them to be together-- very Romeo and Juiliet. Arno is the man-slut of the group; he steals David's girl away, and then falls for Jonathan's cousin. David is the sensitive, emo guy. And Patch is the cute, dreamy one who often disapears for days at a time. Over the course of the book, the guys have to bind together to look for Patch, who seems to be away on one of his wanderings longer than usual.

My only complaint about this book is that the characters are pretty flat and somewhat stereotypical. The author only gives the characters the specific traits that make them "the Jock" or "the player". I think the Insiders would be significantly better if the writer tried to round out the characters a little more.

All in all, an entertaining, fun book. I recommend checking it out at the library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for GG novels, June 19, 2004
This review is from: The Insiders (Insiders (Bloomsbury)) (Paperback)
This is a must read book if you loved Gossip Girl and/or The
A-list. I love Gossip Girl so much, I have all the books. I picked this book up because I saw it in a magazine, and I don't regret it. It is more the boy's point of view, but girls will love it to. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the sequel, May 25, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Insiders (Insiders (Bloomsbury)) (Paperback)
The Insiders is definitely one of my highly recommended novels. I love reading the Gossip Girl series and The A-List novels, but those are mainly about the girls in NYC and L.A.. The Insiders gives you a different glimpse of a guy's life in NYC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Broken promises, May 16, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Insiders (Insiders (Bloomsbury)) (Paperback)
The Insider is about five boys that grow up together. They were a little gang and they did everything together. They made a promise not to go out with any girl that one of them liked, but when they were in high school they broke their promise.

The book is funny, easy to read, and very interesting. I like this book because it is mostly about teens and how they don't keep promises, and I can kind of relate to that.

I would like to recommend this book because once you start reading it you would not want to put it down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm..., May 23, 2004

The novel chronicles the life of a group of five high school boys. The most recent addition to the quintet is Patch. The so-called "glue" of the group, Jonathan, is falling for Patch's thirteen year-old sister, Flan, while his seemingly innocent cousin, Kelli, quickly switches gears and ends up having the time of her life. We never really get to know Patch, or really who the other characters are - insight into their minds is mediocre, though we do become the most understanding of Jonathan, being he does narrate chapters frequently. Though these gorgeous socialates seem far less scuzzy than GG's Chuck Bass, their adventures and misadventures are what will compel you to read on. From heartbreak to break ups and make ups, cheating and partying, these guys have just as much fun as Blair and her girls. Perhaps this is what makes the book a bit more enjoyable than it would be with such bland characters who wouldn't know the true differentiations of love and lust if it kicked them in the ass. There isn't much loyalty between them, either - I pondered over how Jonathan, Mickey, Arno, Patch, and David stayed friends for this long. I'll be on the look out for book number two, but I'm definitely not pre-ordering.

3.0 out of 5 stars Confessions of an insider, June 9, 2004

This review is from: The Insiders (Insiders (Bloomsbury)) (Paperback)
This book is basically about a group of rich NY guys: Jonathan, Arno, Micheal, David and Patch. More like a Gossip Girl in a Boy's point of view. I was excited in starting this book. I found myself laughing in no time. It was hilarious. But later in the middle, i was rather disappointed. The character build-up was slow and the plot's a bit shallow. But near the ending, things were heating up and the characters were explained. So in conclusion... it's not a must-read but a great book if you're in your bikini, sunbathing in the beach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fall In Love With The Insiders!, May 10, 2004

This review is from: The Insiders (Insiders (Bloomsbury)) (Paperback)
This great book about spoiled, hot, goergous, insanly rich (and yet still very nice) guys has been a long time coming! I mean we have Gossip Girl which is AWSOME, but what about the dudes? Well in this new series you'll get to know the five hottest guys in NYC! Meet Micky: The sweet and quite possibly insane Romeo of the group, who will do anything to impress his Juliet (like falling off a roof maybe?) David: The sensitive jock. Arno: the quote "Sluty stud." Patch: The cool laid back guy in the group, so laid back he's MIA -missing in action-. And Jonathan: The glue that holds the group together... THE INSIDERS. Oh and there's Kelli: Jonathan's skanky, and DEFINITELY insane cousin who won't stop until she has NYC falling at her feet. GREAT BOOK AND WAITING IN SUCH ANTICIPATION FOR NUMBER TWO!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars another summer book..., June 28, 2005
By
This review is from: The Insiders (Insiders (Bloomsbury)) (Paperback)
This book is basically about these five childhood friends and how their friendship gets shakey when one of the boys' cousin comes and visits. The thing that I didnt like about this book was that none of the characters were extremely likeable and we didnt get to know them all that much. It wasnt the best book i read but it was mildly entertaining despite it's flaws.

2.0 out of 5 stars Confusing but Micky will make you want to finish the book, January 8, 2005
By
This review is from: The Insiders (Insiders (Bloomsbury)) (Paperback)
The Insiders is kind of confusing in the beginning. The views kept switching around from one person to another and they didnt describe the characters very well. It was just boringly put. Like one guy was a sensitive jock, another a player, one a crazy dare devil whos head-over-heels in love with his girlfriend, and another one who was the glue of the group who "held them together". There was another character, Patch who wasnt introduced really until the end and he was described as some cookoo who always forgot things and ran off and wouldnt remember that he was even lost in the first place. The other characters were really weird too. J.Minton didnt put enough descriptions to get a picture in my mind of what the characters looked like. Like how old they were for one thing. If Flan was 13 or 14, how old was jonathon? and how old was Kelli anyways? In the beginning, it said she was older then jonathon but somewhere towards the end, it said that she was his little cousin. So I was a bit confused about that. The only funny parts were the comments and actions of Micky who i loved the best. He was the only one that made me keep wanting to read the book. I bought both part 1 and 2 of the insiders so i have no choice but to go ahead and read it. If i were you, borrow it instead of buying it, maybe from a friend who was dumb enough to buy it or from a library.
