Customer Reviews

I found that Swindoll's writing is very condusive to teaching or leading a Bible series on the book of Revelations.

Not an in depth study but perfect for someone who wants to read the book of Revelation and be able to understand it on a basic level.

Pastor Swindoll has again produced a beautiful book. As in the rest of the series, he is scholarly without being pedantic. He sticks to what the verses say, and refuses to spiritualize everything. So far, better than just good. Lost of pictures, diagrams, charts, personal illustrations and study aids. Give him an A+. My only grumble, (you were waiting for this since I gave it only 4 stars) is that he is of the pre-tribulation rapture, and interprets a place or two from that perspective. Even when it doesn't quite fit the verse at hand. Like the first resurrection happening before the tribulation, yet also happening again after armageddon at the end of the tribulation. So if you can ignore the pretrib cheerleading, the rest of the book is just dandy.

The hot-for-God Biblical reader will have read any number of previous commentaries with just as many different views of Revelation's story. Revelations is no simple book. Luther famously took a pass on a commentary on it. The diversities of theological opinions are often well anchored in theological research and this is the attraction to re-visit the book as frequently as your Bible study plan permits when a theologian of Swindoll's capacity weighs in.

The `Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ', as the first sentence titles this book by John of Patmos is indeed a mystery. Swindoll considers Revelations as he understands the enigma. Swindoll provides a slightly different spin and rationale and all of it is enjoyable reading. There is no correct commentary or new insight, only considered opinions.

Swindoll sticks to the old line that cannot be disproved. The old line is that the author is John of the 12 disciples. The studied reader might exit the commentary at that point. John of Patmos is almost certainly not John the Discipline, but ... so what? The authorship debate does not detract from Swindoll's insight.

If one has a point of considered disagreement, it might be that Swindoll sees 21 independent apocalyptic events vice 7 events described from 3 perspectives. Swindoll also affirms the logic of the pre-tribulation rapture. These Revelation matters are for the reader to divine as they will, for themselves. God will guide your understanding.

5-star excellent! Swindoll delivers an interesting logic to consider.

"Insights on Revelation" is a commentary on Revelation. While the previous book I read in this series ("Insights on James, 1 & 2 Peter") read like a Bible study (with plenty of Bible background information and enlightening word studies), this book read more like a sermon. The style was more telling the reader what to think about the verses rather than helping the reader understand the verses so they can potentially form their own conclusions.

Rather than discuss the different beliefs about the rapture, Swindoll simply assumed that a pre-Tribulation rapture was true. In one place he said that we're not told exactly what all the symbols mean so we shouldn't get dogmatic about them or that prophecy isn't always given in chronological order, then a little bit later he'd say that such-and-such a symbol means this or things happened in this specific order and timing when the text didn't even hint at that.

He also proposed some ideas I've never heard of before and which don't line up with what the whole Bible teaches, in my opinion. For example, he believes in four separate waves of resurrections with separate times of Judgment for each group.

If you agree with him or just want someone to tell you what to believe, then this won't bother you. However, there were times that I felt the author let his theology force his interpretation of the verses rather than letting the verses form his theology. This didn't happen much in the first half of the commentary (even in the initial prophecy sections), but it became more frequent in the last half.

The author explained who wrote Revelation, when it was written, and who it was written to. Then he took related chunks of the text and looked at each section as a whole and then verse-by-verse.

Chuck Swindoll can make the most difficult Bible passages understandable. This study of the last book of the Bible is clear and well researched and thought provoking.

Dr. Chuck Swindoll does an excellent job giving very thoughtful insights into one of the most difficult books in the Bible.
A person does not have to be a theological expert to understand his writing. The book includes excellent charts, tables, pictures and maps which are very helpful in understanding the Book of Revelation. This book helped me so much that I bought another copy for a friend.

Well researched and presented with an exceptional eloquence. All Charles Swindoll's work is from a high standard. Although he represent a particular segment of the theological spectrum, he delivers work that can be highly appreciated by the broad spectrum of the Christian population.

I've enjoyed getting the picture from the premillennialial perspective and regardless of my own perspective have found the application for life insightful and helpful. It's helped untangle knotted threads in revelation.
