5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding PMP and recorder, July 19, 2008
This review is from: Insignia NS-8V24 Pilot 8GB USB 2.0 MP4/MP3/ FM/Bluetooth w/2.4" LCD (Black) (Electronics)
Outstanding performance on all levels and loaded to the gills with every feature you could possibly want. At long last someone finally did it right! The only two things this little wonder doesn't do is voice record, or tune in AM radio.

Sound quality: Outstanding! So good in fact that you may notice some of the imperfections of your recordings/files that you may not have noticed in your other player/s. It's output is very full and clean across the entire sound spectrum. The 5 band user adjustable EQ is quite effective as it actually has some gain instead of just attenuating every band that's not maxed out as many others do. Also worth nothing is that it has the best S/N ratio of any PMP currently available.

Line in recording: Duel VU meters and an adjustable recording level as well as the ability to code in CD quality PCM (as well as several levels of WMA) make for a recordist's dream come true.

Battery: Decent run time. It's also user replaceable, but not that easy to replace on the fly as the battery has wires and a plug and the access door is held on with a small screw.

FM: More sensitive and selective than most other PMPs. Pulls in fringe stations with ease. Local stations do not overload at all. Less than great signals can be cleaned up do to the ability to manually switch to mono. Setting and recalling presets (as well as recording) is a breeze. It even displays RDS information form stations that transmit it.

Video: Good picture quality and sound. Video line out works well and has about the same quality as a well recorded on good tape EP or LP mode VHS..i.e not the best, but not half bad.

Photo: again good quality reproduction. Adjustable sideshow options...I just wish you could separate the photos into different groups. Perhaps in the next firmware update?

Folder browsing: Yessssssssssssssssss!

SD card slot: A nice touch. IMHO much better to deal with than MicroSD....and yes it will read SDHC (available up to 32 GB at this point in time!).

Bluetooth: Ok... so this I don't exactly get the point of. Why bother with wireless on a portable device? Nevertheless it's capable if you so desire for whatever reason to use the feature. Haven't tried it myself.

Yes, I could just go on and on about it, but I'm sure you get the point by now. I really like it a lot....like ya couldn't tell...8)

5.0 out of 5 stars Serious Firmware problem? - maybe not - updated 9/28/09, June 12, 2009
This review is from: Insignia NS-8V24 Pilot 8GB USB 2.0 MP4/MP3/ FM/Bluetooth w/2.4" LCD (Black) (Electronics)
The Insignia NS-8V24 Pilot... 8gb mp3/video/picture player with FM receiver and bluetooth is an absolutely wonderful unit that is very easy to use and grades very highly on all features...when it works, and therein lay the problem with this unit and the major reason it was discontinued by Best Buy. (see update below)

Basically, there is a major bug in the unit's firmware that causes the unit to randomly lock up and stop responding regardless of whether you are playing music, watching a video, viewing a picture or simply browsing your folders. It might run perfectly for 50 minutes or 5 minutes before it happens, but it WILL lock up at some point necessitating a manual reset to restore normal operation again.

Unfortunately, there is NO firmware upgrade available for this unit nor does it seem there ever will be one so, while the player is wonderful when it works, you WILL become very frustrated with the unit repeatedly locking up. This is not just a problem with my unit, it is common with all of them so keep this in mind if you are thinking of buying one. "If" Insignia ever comes out with a firmware upgrade for this (though highly unlikely), then this unit will be well worth it. As such, I'd recommend you buy something else but if you really want one of these beauties, you can get one on EBay for $30 or so.

Update 9/28/09: After further testing, it appears that this unit only locks up when it encounters a bad file header in a music/picture/video file that was ripped from a CD and then converted to a music file different in size/quality from the original, or a file corrupted in some fashion. When my unit was loaded ONLY with songs copied unchanged from their original CD, I never had any problems with the system locking up so I conclude bad file conversions were the problem and not the unit itself. As such, I heartily recommend this unit without reservation and would give it 5 stars instead of 2 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful product, March 24, 2009

For less than half the price of an iPod, this little gem has far more features and plays mp3 and wma audio. Best liked feature: You can insert an 8 GB SDHC card and double the capacity. Be aware that the internal and external memories present a maximum of 2,000 songs each even though there may be memory left. I have inserted a 16GB card and have plenty of space for other files. I have 4,000 songs on mine, plus videos that look and sound great. Just convert uTube or other clips to avi format. The player can also be used for a storage device or transfering files same as a flash drive. Battery life is super. My other MP3 players are gathering dust. I bought my 8GB Insignia Pilot Player from Best Buy on sale for $99 just before the product was discontinued. I have no idea why they would stop making such a fine product unless it was replaced by another model with updated features.
