4.0 out of 5 stars useful study, April 8, 2008
By
This review is from: The Insistence of the Indian (Paperback)
This a useful study, original in its use of primary source material (e.g. guidebooks to the Capitol) and carefully argued in terms of its conclusions. It resists the sweeping generalizations that too often characterize poco literary criticism, illuminating instead the complex, often contradictory responses of nineteenth-century US writers and artists as they strove to deal with the moral issues raised by "the Indian problem." As such it is a useful complement to studies by Helen Carr and Joshua Bellin, and interesting to read in relation to Benedict Anderson's "Imagined Communities."
