This review is from: Inspiracion-Espiracion Remix (Audio CD)
As with many others, I consider Gotan Project's LA REVANCHA DEL TANGO to be a consistently outstanding success at presenting tango in contemporary contexts. The followup INSPIRACION-ESPIRACION REMIX is a mixed bag of remixes and other tracks, mostly by G.P., but also including cuts by such inspirations as Astor Piazzolla and Anibal Troilo.
My list of highlights starts with a remarkable remix of a Chet Baker version of the Thelonious Monk jazz classic "Round About Midnight," with G.P. surrounding the original Baker trumpet track with their trademark sound. Elsewhere, a hot percussion cut by Domingo Cura segues into a fine Calexico remix of "La Del Ruso" (basically brass and techno sounds on top of the G.P. original cut). Two rap / hip-hop mixes don't do much for me, particularly the Al-Shid cut with profane lyrics ... I never expected a cut issued under the G.P. name to get so unredeemingly ugly. The CD ends with two club / electronica remixes that recall the bonus disc of the USA release of LA REVANCHA (both decent but way different than the original tracks). Unfortunately I cannot access the video on disc two, so someone else will have to review that. The disc also has one audio outtake from LA REVANCHA that is basically more of the same. As a whole, this album has enough good points to be of interest to Gotan Project fans, but others should start with LA REVANCHA.

Following their superb album "La Revancha del Tango," I purchased this CD without listening to it. This one is a disappointment in several places, not the least of which is the ridiculous rap remix, "M.A.T.H." by Al-Shid (the quality of that one rhymes with his name). Why would these excellent musicians presume that someone who likes their tango remixes would necessarily like to listen to a rap remix? In any case, whereas the remainder of the CD is certainly not up to the quality of "La Revancha del Tango," it does shine in places, especially their take on Chet Baker and "Triptico." Even their (yet another) re-remix of "Santa Maria" (see also "Santa Maria 1") is an excellent addition to this collection. Nonetheless, if you're a fan of Gotan Project because of "La Revancha del Tango," take a pass on this one and have a listen instead to their much better follow up, "Lunático."

This album is absolutly out of this world; the mix of trip hop, jazz (the Chet Baker cover is beatiful), hip hop and, the main character, tango is just amazing. Imagine Astor, Anibal, the voices of the outskirts of Manhattan (were I've told the hip-hop was born) and Peter Kruder having a joyfull, solid, ethereal, fruitful conversation.
Just give it a listen...
