As with many others, I consider Gotan Project's LA REVANCHA DEL TANGO to be a consistently outstanding success at presenting tango in contemporary contexts. The followup INSPIRACION-ESPIRACION REMIX is a mixed bag of remixes and other tracks, mostly by G.P., but also including cuts by such inspirations as Astor Piazzolla and Anibal Troilo.

My list of highlights starts with a remarkable remix of a Chet Baker version of the Thelonious Monk jazz classic "Round About Midnight," with G.P. surrounding the original Baker trumpet track with their trademark sound. Elsewhere, a hot percussion cut by Domingo Cura segues into a fine Calexico remix of "La Del Ruso" (basically brass and techno sounds on top of the G.P. original cut). Two rap / hip-hop mixes don't do much for me, particularly the Al-Shid cut with profane lyrics ... I never expected a cut issued under the G.P. name to get so unredeemingly ugly. The CD ends with two club / electronica remixes that recall the bonus disc of the USA release of LA REVANCHA (both decent but way different than the original tracks).

Unfortunately I cannot access the video on disc two, so someone else will have to review that. The disc also has one audio outtake from LA REVANCHA that is basically more of the same. As a whole, this album has enough good points to be of interest to Gotan Project fans, but others should start with LA REVANCHA.

Following their superb album "La Revancha del Tango," I purchased this CD without listening to it. This one is a disappointment in several places, not the least of which is the ridiculous rap remix, "M.A.T.H." by Al-Shid (the quality of that one rhymes with his name). Why would these excellent musicians presume that someone who likes their tango remixes would necessarily like to listen to a rap remix? In any case, whereas the remainder of the CD is certainly not up to the quality of "La Revancha del Tango," it does shine in places, especially their take on Chet Baker and "Triptico." Even their (yet another) re-remix of "Santa Maria" (see also "Santa Maria 1") is an excellent addition to this collection. Nonetheless, if you're a fan of Gotan Project because of "La Revancha del Tango," take a pass on this one and have a listen instead to their much better follow up, "Lunático."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!!!, November 3, 2004

This album is absolutly out of this world; the mix of trip hop, jazz (the Chet Baker cover is beatiful), hip hop and, the main character, tango is just amazing. Imagine Astor, Anibal, the voices of the outskirts of Manhattan (were I've told the hip-hop was born) and Peter Kruder having a joyfull, solid, ethereal, fruitful conversation.
Just give it a listen...

5.0 out of 5 stars Misinterpreted by most, May 10, 2005
This review is from: Inspiracion-Espiracion Remix (Audio CD)
"La Revancha Del Tango" is the blueprint to some of these tracks and I suggest you get them both. However, to truly appreciate this CD and the Gotan Project you must have some background in the early South American bohemian music derived from Europe and Africa (Tango, Milonga, Chacarera, etc).

It's amazing that they picked Chet Baker's version of "Round About Midnight" over it's original, but it's brilliant because it would not be as fitting otherwise. Mixing hardcore rap lyrics with classical tango has not been done by anyone else and to add some more creativity.. The bonus CD will have you moving.

I love this CD because I grew up lisening to Tango, I appreciate mastered rap and love Miles.

I bought this CD because of La Revancha Del Tango and was disappointed. While I appreciate their desire to not make all their CD's sound the same, most of it was too different for my liking. I have never liked music that begins with talking and interviews, it sounds like someone held a tape player to the radio and walked away. I will give them one more chance though.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much of a (re)mixture, April 2, 2011
This review is from: Inspiracion: Espiracion (Audio CD)
I like the first three songs (Cité Tango, Round About Midnight, Confianzas -- La Cumparsita is too short to really be considered a song). But then the CD starts to lose focus. The Man takes too long to really get going; Percussion is just a bore; and then you find that there are remixes of La Del Ruso, El Capitalismo Foréno, Tríptico and Santa Maria from La Revancha del Tango, not as good as the originals IMO -- simply annoying. If GoTan want to do remixes, fine, but put them on a CD of remixes, not one that customers think is new material. Tres Y Dos isn't GoTan style material at all; M.A.T.H even less so: English (and rap, at that) on a GoTan CD!!! Puh-leese! As well as this CD, I have La Revancha del Tango, Lunático, and Tango 3.0, and I love them (even Tango 3.0, which many fans seem to be disappointed in also) -- but I can't enjoy most of this CD.

I love to dance to modern tango music. I was disappointed that album was not this type of cd. The first 4 songs start off hopeful but then it fades further away from sounding like modern tango. Contains one classic tango which sounded nice in comparison with some tracks containing rap mixes.
