Editorial Reviews

"He's the unsung hero of blues and funk. His music is so potent that it only blossomed 30 years after it was first released." - Questlove

Inspiration Information / Wings Of Love features the original Inspiration Information album paired with Wings Of Love, an album of 13 previously unreleased live and studio tracks recorded 1975-2000. The first CD will comprise the original nine-song Inspiration Information album, with the addition of four previously unreleased bonus tracks recorded in 1971. The second CD, Wings Of Love, is the first new music that the world has heard from Shuggie since 1974.

"Shuggie Otis' eclectic style and stellar musicianship stayed intact." - The New York Times

Voted BEST NEW RE-ISSUE by Pitchfork. "Wings Of Love is a quietly amazing document of Otis' dogged determination"

"Shuggie Otis is the living avatar of psychedelic soul, a true guitar virtuoso." - The Hollywood Reporter

"To call Inspiration information a magnificent anomaly - a work of genius - is an understatement." - Magnet Magazine

If you're a fan of Shuggie Otis-especially his last album "Inspiration Information" ("I.I."), you should probably make room on the shelf for this new 2 CD reissue of that album, along with a batch of unheard tunes from the mid 70's to 2000. That album was a culmination of Otis's sound-the music was soulful, psychedelic, soothing, visionary, and because it was hard to categorize, it basically disappeared after it's release. The album was mostly composed, arranged, and performed by Otis alone. He used an early version of a drum machine (the "Maestro Rhythm King" which Sly Stone also used), horns, keyboards, layered rhythms, and his considerable guitar skills to make an individualistic album. Never a "good" vocalist, his voice had a certain innocence, a poignancy, that lent his songs a certain charm.

Yet his music wasn't really startling-more soothing than anything else. The album seems to just gently float into your head on funky wings, transporting you to somewhere slightly new and nice. Otis is perhaps best known for his tune "Strawberry Letter 23" (on the album "Freedom Flight"), an answer to an imaginary girlfriend's letters. Otis' first gig was actually in my hometown with his father's band, at a long gone club named "Jazzville".

This new reissue contains four tracks recorded during and around the "I.I." sessions, but were left off because they didn't really fit with Otis' vision. Listen to the title track, "Island Letter", "Sparkle City", "Rainy Day", or "Pling!" for good examples of Otis' sound and work on that album. Of the four "new" tracks, "Miss Pretty" (recorded in 1971) could easily sit next to tracks on "I.I.". It has that funky, soulful sound, but it's closer to pop music, so it was left off the album.

It was shortly after the turn of the millennium,in terms of months that my father came out of our local record store with a new CD he'd heard a lot about. He said David Byrne had rediscovered this mid 70's album and reissued it on his Luaka Pop label. It was called Inspiration Information, and it was by this man I never heard of: Shuggie Otis. Around this time Shuggie, by that point middle aged and having released no new music in 26 years, appeared on the Late Night with Conan O'Brien. A child prodigy and proud son of blues icon Johnny Otis, Shuggie had a unique mental and musical personality that made for some of the most compelling music within the soul spectrum. And I say that because his music is highly exploratory of the entire soul/R&B/blues/funk lexicon within which he creates. So recently I made a very happy discovery. Shuggie Otis had gone nowhere in his absence. He'd been writing and recording-trying to sell demos to many different record companies for years without much success. In fact this album 'Wings Of Love',included here was started in 1975 and rather than represented one era, sprawled out to represent decades: recorded between than and roughly 1990, whilst completed around 2000. Because they are put together,I'll discuss both albums separately.

1974's Inspiration Information begins with the beautifully harmony and organ rich midtempo title song.

The remastered issue of "Inspiration Information" is wonderful. The bonus tracks are nice too. I can definitely see the Hendrix influence on those songs, particularly "Miss Pretty", "Magic", and "Castle Top Jam". Best way to describe this album is that it's a quirkier, more psychedelic version of Sly Stone's "There's A Riot Goin' On". Classic album that I can listen all the way through and put on repeat.

I already had an older copy of "Inspiration Information", but I got this album because I wanted to check out the second disc that had all new songs from Shuggie. The new material, "Wings of Love", is a compilation of various tracks Shuggie has recorded from 1975 to 2000. Some of it I like, some of it not so much. Some things I felt these new songs were missing were the blues influence and more importantly, his quirky arrangements and instrumentation. His heavy use of synths on the 80's tracks aren't really my cup of tea, either. I miss his more organic 70's sound and his use of analog instruments.

Now, I love Shuggie, and I think he has a nice voice with a certain charm to it. However, I think his voice best serves his music in small doses. In a lot of the new material, he seems to be trying to make his singing the focus. Personally, Shuggie should be focusing on the instruments and getting down, which I think are his true strengths. In tracks like "Special" and "Give Me Something Good", the backing music is busier but less adventurous (if that makes any sense). It almost sounds like he's trying to imitate people like Quincy Jones and The Brothers Johnson (their biggest hit, ironically, was a cover of Shuggie's "Strawberry Letter 23").
