The 'For Colored Girls' soundtrack is the musical companion for the upcoming Tyler Perry film which has been adapted from Ntozake Shange's 1975 Obie & Tony Award-winning play, 'FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF.' The soundtrack features all new and unreleased music from such artists as Nina Simone, Gladys Knight, Leona Lewis, Estelle, Laura Izibor, Macy Gray, Janelle Monae and Lalah Hathaway. The Soundtrack sets the many stories of struggle told within the film's chore poem to music to reflect women's ongoing battle with love, abandonment and the finding of self.

"For Colored Girls" is the soundtrack to Tyler Perry's new movie starring Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Loretta Devine, Phylicia Rashad and Macy Gray among others. The movie is an adaptation of a stage play, and Perry's translation of this to a movie has earned tonnes of harsh reviews.
The soundtrack, on the other hand, is a winner and an all women affair with something for everyone. Opening is "Main Title", a haunting string-swathed classical piano piece with poetic recitals by Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise and Janet Jackson, followed by the retro Soul "Longer And Stronger" by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. The lilting "All Day Long (Blue Skies)" is seventies Stevie Wonder-style Jazzy Soul done by Estelle, while "What More Can They Do" by Laura Izibor is groovy with echoing guitars. Lalah Hathaway lends her dusky vocals to the soulful piano ballad "Sun" while "Ansomnia" with stabbing bass, electro beats and swirling synths features Zaki Ibrahim.
"Settle" is acoustic Soul with Gladys Knight and choir-style backing vocals. "La Donna In Viola" is a Classical piece and features Karen Slack, Andrea Jones-Soloja and Hollywood Symphony Orchestra. "Sechita (A Senhora Em Amarelo)" is another recital, this time featuring Anika Noni Rose, Carondelet Percussion Ensemble against a clunky Jazzy backdrop. The bouncy Pop/Rock "Stand Up" features Macy Gray, and maintaining the tempo is Janelle Monáe's catchy "Without A Fight".
"Four Women" is a Jazzy piano piece with Nina Simone, Simone (Nina Simone's daughter), Laura Izibor and Ledisi, truly outstanding. "Closing are "I Know Who I Am", a sweeping piano ballad by Leona Lewis, and an instrumental of "Main Title".
The last all female Soul soundtrack that was this good (which I can think of) was "Waiting To Exhale".... Read more ›

I am enjoying the music from and inspired by the original motion picture, "For Colored Girls." My favorite song is track #5 entitled, "Sun" by Lalah Hathaway.

As a colored woman I thought the movie was amazing. Many people say that the story line For Colored Girls is really for all girls. It is a targeted for a black audience. However in the original play the ladies are represented by different colors. They were known as lady in blue or red. This was truly a dynamic movie. These women represented women everywhere. It also shows how important it is live. Only thing that got to me was the constant drama. It was more of a downer and made feel sad. It also shows a negative side to the black community. It was so raw. I was actually watching a woman being raped up close and personal. It also showed the children being dropped from the building. It leaves you wondering on some parts, like how Nyla ended up in the hospital. This movie will bring many to tears and others a solution to their any problems. You can learn a lot from a movie, book, or song. I enjoyed the movie, but should have happier ending than sad. I love the way the women came together.The movie was touching but surreal. I hope everyone see it and enjoys it a well.

I'd give 5 stars just for "Four Women." There are several things about "Settle" that left me unsettled (not the best song choice for Gladys). It's a guarantee that I listen to this once a day, 5 days a week; the more comfortable I become with the soundtrack, the more I begin to hear.
