Book Description

April 1994
Installation is arguably the most original, vigorous and fertile form of art today. This book sets out to describe the tradition and explore the achievements and ambitions of the installation artist. Michael Archer's introduction traces the history of installation art from Duchamp's first readymade through Pop tableaux to more recent developments such as Land Art and Process Art. This is followed by a global range of installations, presented and documented by Nicolas de Oliveira, Nicola Oxley and Michael Petry. The pieces are grouped into four sections, with more than 260 illustrations: site works from artists such as Christo, Richard Wilson, James Turrell and Hans Haacke; media works by Wolf Vostell, Meg Cranston, Joseph Kosuth, Nam June Paik and others; the museum works of Barbara Bloom, Mike Kelley, Cary Leibovitz, Ange Leccia and their peers; and architectural works by practitioners including Rachel Whiteread, Daniel Buren, Mario Merz and Vong Phaophanit.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Installation, once a term used to denote the preparation of works for viewing, has become a vigorous art form in itself, a combination of existential happening and planned structure. The need to inhabit the artistic environment, to allow and even require the spectator to be a part of the work, has become as much a political statement as an artistic decision. Duchamp and Christo, Schwitters and Nam June Paik are all part of this long tradition, traced here from the 19th century to the present in well-annotated illustrations and brief texts, grouped in four sections: site, media, museum, and architecture. A chronology dating from 1879 to 1993 and an extensive bibliography make this a useful source for further study. For larger art collections.

From Booklist

Installation is a quintessentially modern art form. A hybrid of disciplines, from painting and sculpture to performance and architecture, installation attempts to blur the boundary between art and life. This picture-rich international survey covers the history of installation art and provides a host of diverse examples. Such progenitors as Marcel Duchamp and his readymades, Kurt Schwitters and his room-filling constructions, Yves Klein and his performances, and Robert Smithson and his earthworks are identified and discussed in the introductory commentary. The main body of the volume approaches installation in terms of settings. Site-specific works are presented first, then media-related installations, museum pieces, and interior and exterior installations linked to architecture. The artists include Christo, Bill Viola, Jonathan Borofsky, Barbara Kruger, Bruce Nauman, Jenny Holzer, Mike Kelly, and many European artists whose names will be new to readers. No art form can rival installation for sheer variety of material, style, setting, and intent, a profusion well celebrated within these pages. Donna Seaman
