5.0 out of 5 stars moody french house takes on a new twist!
I first heard about "Installation Sonore" in Wallpaper* and, being a devoted fan of this magazine coupled with an interest in the output of French house DJs such a Cassius and DaftPunk, my interest was immediately aroused.

The cover of the album alone should be enough of an invitation to buy this disc, and buy it you most certainly should. Don't be alarmed...

3.0 out of 5 stars Honestly, I Expected More
My first album by Rinôçerôse was the dynamite "Music Kills Me," which took house to new directions with its fuse of drum loops, guitars, flutes and jazz influences. However, a lot of people were seemingly disappointed with the album and suggested that I get their debut, which they say is better. While many of the jams on this album are indeed above-average,...

Don't be alarmed by the first track though - which is almost a kind of warm up for the delights to come.

What can you expect? Think of a classic house groove overlaid with what can only be described as an eclectic French vibe - distorted guitars, Latin rhythms and other strange sounds all wonderfully crafted and mixed together.

All the tracks have certain common underlying sound references, but they are no less interesting for this. You'll be treated to a soundscape that is innovative, refreshing and deeply rewarding that gets better the more you listen.

My favourite track is called "323 Secondes De Musique Repetitive" which comes in at about half way through - it has a deep, expansive and wonderful groove best suited to late night sessions. You need good equipment to make the most of it, but even on something a little more modest, I defy anyone not to be totally blown away.

Go on....buy this disc. I PROMISE you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous, April 7, 2000
This review is from: Installation Sonore (Audio CD)
I bought this on a whim because of their hype in URB magazine and I can definitely see why it got the attention it did. The house on the disc is top of the line deep french organic funk with beautiful guitar parts throughout each track. I can't say I have heard anything like this before and it is welcome refreshment from the norm. Beautifully warm and progressive beats and atmospheres with a touch of the past. Fans of Daft Punk, Cassius, Alex Gopher, San Fransisco house, and Underworld should check this out. Dope house has a new face.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Yeah!, May 30, 2000

I couldn't agree more with the other reviewers. This has a latin funk to it and is smooth and fresh like the waterfall.

First of all, listen to each clip here on Amazon and then consider this CD to be twice that good. The clips are very repetative and the CD really isn't.

Listen to the disco sound this stuff has. They use a number of instruments so it's not boring techno, but rather good dance music with solid bass.

Everyone needs a good dance CD, and this is as good as they get.

If anyone out there owns this, and they don't agree with me............please, please, please tell me what is better than this. If there truly is something better than this I want it.

5.0 out of 5 stars French Indie House Music = Great CD!, August 2, 2001
By
This review is from: Installation Sonore (Audio CD)
I first heard Rinocerose live at the Area:One music festival in July and made the mistake of standing next to one of the speakers. My hearing was muted for the next few days, but after their performance, I knew the next CD i would buy would be theirs.

Rinocerose are comprised of 7 musicians (some using multiple instruments throughout each piece/set.) The ensemble works well together and gathered up enough energy to fill the tent they played in (whereas only a handful of people stood by to watch them come onstage).

They opened with "Le Mobilier" and their flutist (Francke) literally stole the show during that song and the subsequent ones he appeared on. The house beats and deep rhythms coupled with the extraordinary electric guitar playing by Rinocerose's FOUR guitar players provides more than enough oomph to get anybody moving.

The techno beats sound like they were created on a Roland Re-Birth machine (and they probably were) but the true musical delight (besides the beats) comes from the guitar and flute work.

I wish the flutist would come out with a solo album, because I'd buy it. Sometimes the melodic flute riffs get drowned out by the four guitars and loud house beats.

Also I'd like to point out Rinocerose use of the talking-guitar sound a la Peter Frampton. Much use of it is displayed on "Installation Sonore."

The CD is worth it, especially if you enjoy House/Rock music, but hate the disco cheesiness of Daft Punk.

5.0 out of 5 stars The new sound of House, September 15, 2000

Rinocerose has ventured into new territory...and boy does it sound great!...combining elements such as funky latin beats with catchy guitar riffs and some groovy basslines...from the opening beats to the albums's first track, which you may have already heard without even knowing it, on a VW commercial that's currently airing on TV, to the end of this 53 minute album, it's just non-stop high-energy house...these french dj's have found a winning concoction in Installation Sonore...my favorite track is "Rock Classics, Vol. 1" which owns a downright funky beat with bombastic bass supporting it...323 Seconds is another great track along with the innovative album opener...the latin influenced Le Mobilier is another one worth your attention...my reccomendation to any fan of excellent party music, or house, or funk is to obtain this cd with utmost brevity! Five stars! enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, June 13, 2000
This review is from: Installation Sonore (Audio CD)
First of, let me say that this is an awesome CD. The reason it gets a 4 is because is my book 5's are reserved for CD's that totaly blows your mind and knock your socks off. This one comes close. Great use of guitares in every song provide refreshing sounds rather than the usual electronic beeps and bleeps of house music. The thing that amazed me the most was the flute. This gives the whole album a very flowing, organic feel. Laid back and up beat at the same time; very jazzy. This album is great for relaxing or dancing to. The rythmes and melodies get in your head and make you feel good. If you're looking for something new and exciting, check out this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars French Touch, November 26, 1999
By
Ci Celikyay (Ancyra, Anatolia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Installation Sonore (Audio CD)
Maybe some people will say that there is nothing new in here. Indeed, I hear ekhoes and ekhoes of things I know... and many of them... the 70's in general, the whole 90's French Touch thingy. Ekhoes of Daft Punk, Cassius, The Stranglers... Ekhoes of the Stone Roses. Jazz *and* House--if such a thing is possible. But it is Excellent... A friend even said that this was the sound of generic German Porno soundtrack. And that was one hell of a blasphameous statement! Cheap? Naa. I have bought the thing 20 days ago and I have been looping it ever since (=not listened to ANYTHING else.) My buddies think I have lost it... kompletely 'Le Mobilier' is exxpecially excellent.

Cheers Ci of KAVAKLIDERE, ANCYRA
