Finally an ASP book with a complete set of working examples,
By A Customer
This review is from: Instant ASP Scripts (Paperback)
I have been developing software for more years than id like toadmit and have been doing quite a bit of Microsoft stuff since therefirst product that could concievably be called an operating system appeared in 1995. I have also been writing quite a bit of ASP in the last few years and "Instant ASP Scripts" is a great resource for beginners and experts alike. The primary reason for this is its large and diverse set of complete working examples. All to often, programming language reference books go on and on blabbering about the semantics, syntax, history, theory, proper style, quotes from the authors favorite philosophers, ... Then the examples they present or either trivial and don't help you with what you are trying to do or they are gigantic and take hours to decipher. When I am developing software, I want a book that has relevant working examples that I can understand in 5 minutes and will show me how to do the things I need to do NOW. Mr Buczek has delivered exactly that in this book and I look forward to more of the same in the near future!I feel I must comment on a previous review that made some disparaging remarks about Mr. Buczek's code. I seriously doubt that the code is intended to be copied byte for byte into any enterprise application. This is a reference to quickly find out how to make something work in ASP and its the software developers job to leverage that infomation and make it "enterprise ready" in the target application. I am a seasoned ASP developer and I am not appaled by the code in this book! I take it for what it is, a great reference! One of the reasons I have pursued advanced degrees in Computer Science is my frustration with and desire to move far beyond these kinds boorish attitudes and petty comments about style, design, methodology, ... We are in the STONE AGE of computer software and the most eloquent design, the most advanced methodology, the most perfectly designed code or any other object oriented / state of the art c**p you want to apply will get you no where close to developing the software equivalent of goat brain! Does anyone know if the goat brain code is clean and wonderful? After a billion years of evolution, its probably a mass of spaghetti code, but there is no doubt that it is "a full featured enterprise application" far beyond our current pitiful capabilities.

Structured very well, SQL and VB intensive,
By Ross Richards (TAFE student) (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Instant ASP Scripts (Paperback)
The book is excellent apart from missing a couple of critical parts. It could have had a few pages on Access Databases and also it could have had a few pages on javascripted asp and the set up of it. As I am a intermediate java programmer with no VB skills, some areas where very grey when converting them over or just doing plain VB was difficult. Overall it is a very good book and I only bought it after reading the reviews on amazon.com. It is worthy of the 5 stars since most books cannot match the way it is taught. This book combined with some other urls (ie www.activeserverpages.com/learn/toc.asp ) it is very useful. I can recommend a book with this consistent teaching applied.

A Through Reference,
By Otto Eixmann Jr. (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Instant ASP Scripts (Paperback)
I own a lot of books on ASP but none like this. It is filled with examples of nothing but ASP code that can be used in a business environment as well as personal which are throughly explained. I have used his examples to write code of my own. I have installed his examples on my own web server and they always work correctly. The databases are written in SQL but not provided, which is not a problem because the code to generate them is included. I keep a copy of this book at home and at the office for reference. On occasion I have e-mailed Mr. Buczek with a question about an example, he has always responded and tried to help as much as he can.

I love this book!,
This review is from: Instant ASP Scripts (Paperback)
This book rules! I'm primarily a graphic designer not a developer or spelling bee and the examples in the book are very useful and will allow you to be productive right off the bat ... but the cool thing about this book is the approach. He shows you the the finished product (what the scripts do) Then show the script in whole so you can try to understand it and then he breaks it down you and tells you what each part does. I've learned more in a week from this book than I've learn trying to learn asp for the last year.Very cool!

hi, first sorry for my bad english, im a programmer from israel.this book is very good one but one important thing should be said:this book is not for beginner asp programmers means it does not include almost any explanation about asp syntax, reference, object explanation and so on. this book is for people already know the language and want to expand their understanding of its ability. by differents scripts the author takes you through many daily examples asp can be useful, all scripts are accompanied by good explanations, line by line.i loved this book, it helped me to understand the power of asp. yoni

The most practical ASP Book on the market,
By Robert Baird (Alexandria, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Instant ASP Scripts (Paperback)
I own probably every book written on ASP. "Instant ASP Scripts" by Greg Buczek is probably the only one that provides the practical tools necessary to actually create a dynamic web application. I am a beginner (no previous programming background) and I have found that the best way to learn ASP is by reading and writing "real code". Greg provides line-by-line explanations of what the script does. Presented in this way, I have found I can actually understand what is going on. Additionally, not only are the tons of specific scripts he provides for logins, auto-email, graphing, usage tracking, etc. very useful, they are easily adaptable to suit specific requirements. I think this book is great and was well worth the price.

Good examples, lacks reference,

Instant ASP Scripts does exactly what its title suggests. It has many working example of useful web pages that are easily adapted to other uses. The one criticism would be that it lacks a reference section. You would think that an 800-page book would devote a chapter on complete definitions of what amounts to 5 objects. For instance, I can't find a complete list of server variables. Also, I'm not confident that all methods and properties are covered without a reference section. The good news is that all I needed to know so far is given in solid examples, which for the most part are more valuable than boring definitions for the RAD community. Having some experience with VBScript, I was able to get what I needed from the book quickly. Of course that is what counts. Good job!

An excellent book for ASP beginners. Greg gives a good insight about all the stuff that can actually be done using ASP. All the examples are well documented. Most impressive was the various ideas that come to mind while reading this book. Pretty exciting.

It Works!,
By Sir Richard (Oceanside, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Instant ASP Scripts (Paperback)
This book shows the technical and creative integration of HTML, ASP, VB, SQL, and Access' DB to provide practical internet feedback for site users. Two thumbs up. While I prefer SQL Server 7 over Access, switching the two DBs is a minor code change. For large company employees, the author shows how to beef up its intranet and create a corporate library. As a start-up web company, I'm more intrigued by the chalkboard, web ring, visitor tracking, and survey applications. The OL Store is also very instructive.
