Editorial Reviews

HISTORY introduces INSTANT EXPERT, an exciting new line of titles offering on-the-spot knowledge to students and lifelong learners on a wide variety of topics.

Myths are often the first stories we learn as children--iconic tales where good and evil clash, and humanity and fantasy collide. Thousands of years ago, myths were created to help frame the world of the ancients, and dictate the guidelines of their societies. But could these mythological warriors--and the tales they inspired--have been real? The legend of Beowulf, the Viking world s most famous warrior, is the ultimate tale of courage. Pit against thirsty invaders, barbaric monsters, and a fire-breathing dragon, Beowulf emerged as Norse mythology's greatest hero. HISTORY explores this epic legend, including unearthed burial mounds and ancient carvings that suggest the story of Beowulf could be more than myth.

5.0 out of 5 stars 47-Minute Installment of HC's "Clash of the Gods" November 19, 2011
Verified Purchase
I agree with the above reviewers about the quality of this DVD, but I have one caveat: I ordered this thinking it was a documentary on "Beowulf" that I hadn't seen before. But when I started watching it I quickly realized that this is nothing more than the "Beowulf" installment of History Channel's "Clash of the Gods" series (which is great). Since I already own "Clash of the Gods," I needlessly plunked down $11 for a documentary I already have. Just warning you so you don't make the same mistake. If you don't have the "Clash of the Gods" set, Amazon sells it for less than $18 and it's over three hours of stuff on Greek myths, Norse myths, Tolkien, etc. Plus the "Beowulf" episode.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for teachers and students! August 20, 2011
By KAG
This is a great documentary series from the History Channel, and I think this DVD is a perfect visual aid during a Beowulf unit. Experts discuss Anglo-Saxon culture, religion, mythology, the facts behind Beowulf the myth, and much more. There is also an interactive quiz component!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Done October 11, 2010

This dvd is very well done. The dramatization of the story is better than the recent movie with Ray Winstone and Anthony Hopkins; as such you almost get two pleasures for the price of one, you get a thorough introduction into the story of Beowulf and you get a dramatization that pulls you right into the story. I highly recommend this dvd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the backstory and setting images April 26, 2014
Verified Purchase
The video on this CD is from a History Channel series about mythological heroes. The specific segment is from "Clash of the Gods." It is a series of scholars explaining the backstory of "Beowulf" with a few interspersed film segments that are pretty low-budget. There's also a fair amount of re-showing of the same graphic or image. In other words, it isn't a movie. That said, my high school said it was helpful because they got to see the settings of the story, heard some historical context, and also learned some theories from noted scholars. The story section is 47 minutes long followed by a lousy 10-question multiple choice quiz that was good for a chuckle with the kids. Next year I'll show this 10-15 minutes per class over a few days instead of all in one setting.
