4.0 out of 5 stars Good HTML Starting point
I bought this guide when I was getting to grips with learning HTML. It was at it's best then as a supplementary reference with clear explanations and detailed technical info. As a book to be used on its own -- for the beginner, it may be better to start with one of the online guides as its format tends to assume you know a little, -- but for use as a second...

2.0 out of 5 stars Adequate for reference, but nothing special
Although the book tends to be visually appealing to an HTML reference purchaser, the book is definitely not a favorite. The examples in this book are not too good, and perhaps reference is all that may be obtained from it. It is definitely NOT worth purchasing for absolute beginners. Additionally, for those who have adequate HTML experience, there are several free HTML...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good HTML Starting point, February 14, 2000
This review is from: Instant HTML Programmer's Reference Html (Paperback)
I bought this guide when I was getting to grips with learning HTML. It was at it's best then as a supplementary reference with clear explanations and detailed technical info. As a book to be used on its own -- for the beginner, it may be better to start with one of the online guides as its format tends to assume you know a little, -- but for use as a second reference, or someone with a little knowledge, it comes into its own with useful sections covering most of what you will need to know to do HTML programming, or just designing your own website.

Its biggest weaknesses are that, in my opinion, it skims the basics making it more difficult for the complete the novice (but good for the advanced programmer) and is a little weak on covering the differences between Netscape and IE, and doesn't really mention other browsers.

As a reference for the more experienced HTML programmer, it is useful, but there are better books out there (my favorite being "HTML Programmers Reference" by Powell & Whitworth).

I wouldn't swap this a reference aid now that I have it and know where to find everything in it, but as a more advanced programmer Powell & Whitworths book is a much better buy.

All in all, if you are a complete HTML novice, try a web tutorial before buying this book and you will get your money's worth. If you are a relative beginner, buy this book, it'll help you design better web pages to HTML 4.0 standards. If you are experienced or advanced in HTML go for a better reference book first like the one I mentioned above or something similar.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real "Reference Guide" for HTML 4.0, October 15, 1999
This review is from: Instant HTML Programmer's Reference Html (Paperback)
I found this book very useful, not only for its extensive description of all tags and attributes, but also for the useful appendixes at the end of the book. There is a very good summary of CSS properties, Javascript language, a VBScript run-time error table, several pages filled with HTML color names and hexadecimal values, so that you don't have to use any special product to create pages with matching colors. I recommend this guide to all those that want to write HTML conforming to the W3C reccomendations.

Although the book tends to be visually appealing to an HTML reference purchaser, the book is definitely not a favorite. The examples in this book are not too good, and perhaps reference is all that may be obtained from it. It is definitely NOT worth purchasing for absolute beginners. Additionally, for those who have adequate HTML experience, there are several free HTML reference sites on the internet that may serve just as useful if not more than this WROX edition. If you're an individual who needs a hardcopy reference, I'd suggest looking for something better.

I had already done a few tutorials on the Internet for learning HTML, but this book really enhanced my understanding of HTML tags & had much more detail than those tutorials. I keep it by my side at work as a great reference! I would recommend it to anyone who is just learning HTML.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Reference Manual, October 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Instant HTML Programmer's Reference Html (Paperback)
This is an incredible guide to HTML, and I carry it with me wherever I go.

Not just a reference guide, each chapter presents a theme. For instance, there's a chapter on forms, a chapter on Frames, etc.

Size-wise, it fits nicely into your briefcase.

This book is invaluable to anyone who needs to do web development.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for new and advanced HTML programmers, March 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Instant HTML Programmer's Reference Html (Paperback)
This is by far the best reference book in my collection. The format is clear, consise, and easy to read, without being cluttered by heavy use of pictures and symbols, unlike many other HTML references. This book improves a great deal on its predecessor with the coverage of HTML 4.0 and Cascading Style Sheets, a must-know for anyone involved in Web development. And it's still small enough to fit in a briefcase.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, comprehensive reference book, August 19, 1997
By A Customer
Mr. Wright's book is well organized, loaded with illustrations, and a pleasure to read. The last chapters, which cover scripting languages and the anticipated introduction of style sheets, provide a valuable look ahead to the world of Netscape/MSIE 4. This book also a bargain

5.0 out of 5 stars A great reference guide. Not bad for a novice either, July 27, 1997

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The is one really good book. It explains in some detail all the HTML tags and their attributes without becoming long-winded on any one subject. This book has made many things very clear to me. If you're brand new to web page authoring..buy it because it will suppliment your beginner's book. If you are already familiar with writing web pages..buy it because of it's quick reference value. I don't think you can find a better book for the $$

5.0 out of 5 stars The only guide you really need..., July 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Instant HTML Programmer's Reference Html (Paperback)
Long ago I waded through the sea of HTML reference titles and opted for the v.3.2 guide. I repeated the process recently and, again, opted for the wrox guide. This is truly a godsend, distilling down essentially the same info found in those thousand-page behemoths, and for under $20 rather than around $50. The typsetting and format is conducive to finding exactly what you need fast. My only minor quibble is that all screenshots are from Windows browsers (which is inevitable, I suppose) but makes things a bit more cluttered than they might be with Mac shots.

Overall, couple this with your HTML editor's documentation and you should not need much else to enter the coding realm. The tables in the appendixes are indeed worth the cover price.
