1.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous waste of time, energy and money, February 11, 2006

Like someone else said, I'd give it zero stars if I could. I took four years of high school French and I bought this program with the misplaced hope of being able to brush up on my pronunciation, conversation and vocab.

However, the second I popped the CD in, I knew I'd made a mistake. The whole thing is set up in a really useless way with ambitious expectations.

Throughout, you are only taught limited vocabulary, then, in the dictation section, are asked to understand a horrible computer simulated voice speaking French to you.

The "interactive games" are something a five year old would be bored with and, honestly, I got so irritated at the lack of advancement that I threw the whole thing away.

Even as someone with a relatively extensive background in the language, I found this to be a difficult program to use because of it's confusing set-up. Plus, you don't really have the chance to advance your skills since everytime you use the program, it's the same material...just in a different order.

Avoid this program if you really want to learn the language and spend an extra $20-$30 on something that works.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not learn much, June 18, 2003

Instant Immersion French is poor when it comes to teaching you French. I was just unable to learn from this program unlike some other programs which have helped me. Beware this product, I would consider a different company's product over this one. I have also tried French Now by Transparent Language and found that it taught me French quite well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really should be zero stars, November 5, 2003

This product is really a disappointment. There are no menus and no lessons one, two, etc. On CD 1 you learn some basic words and then on CD 2 there is nothing but French. The other CDs are not much more help. I bought this program to learn French and now I'm considering not wasting my time, trashing it and starting again.

3.0 out of 5 stars pretty good; requires some self-motivation, May 31, 2003

if you're serious about wanting to learn a language, this is good starter stuff to learn how to speak. but it's not going to grab your hand and make you use it, and it's not as engaging as, say, grand theft auto vice city. (the "game" cd, oscar lake, is pretty lame.)

i own this and enjoy it, but i wouldn't recommend it for the casual student. i've taken real french classes and am not sure i'd recommend this to someone brand new to the langauge. bonne chance!

1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless, March 16, 2003

It should have got 0 rating. You could buy a English-French dictionary instead of buying this. This does not 'teach' you anything. Do not spend your heard earned money on this

3.0 out of 5 stars It's an okay program if you already know some French, January 31, 2005

I am an intermediate level French speaker. Therefore, I found these lesson to be basically a boring review. CD 1 was for beginners (BORING! but NOT sufficient on its own to improve your knowledge.). CD 2 was an advanced beginner / intermediate level CD; all in French. CD 3 was kinda like CD 2 only originally done by different people. CD 4 was the interactive picture dictionary which seemed to be a waste of a CD. A French-English dictionary is much more complete. Finally, CD 5 was "Who is Oscar Lake." A game that I found lame and irritating because I kept having the same ending. The exercises on this CD were also ok, but easy for me. In conclusion, this software was an ok diversion but you WILL not be able to learn French from scratch with it.
