Still going strong (and getting stronger) after all these years,
By Frampton's mammal "do you feel like i do" (northern michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Instant Live: 2004 Summer Tour (Audio CD)
Doesn't this guy ever get old? Here it is, nearly 30 years after his definitive live album, and Frampton still sounds like he actually still enjoys playing his old favorites on stage. Of course there are the inevitable Do You Feel Like We Do, and Baby, I Love Your Way, but what makes this album special is his unique interpretations of his newer songs from the Now CD. Verge of a Thing, and Not Forgotten both sound great, as do the rest of his numbers. Sad to think of Bob Mayo not playing here, but everyone here is a first rate musician. Hopefully we'll get another studio album soon from Peter with all new material; the Now album was his best since... well, I guess I'll just say it; it was perhaps his best ever. Also, am I the only person who would love to hear Frampton live with totally new material? Or maybe a disk featuring tracks with only Frampton's vocals from The Herd & Humble Pie years. (sorry Steve Marriot!)

It's not his fault. The all-time best selling live album was a big suprise to everyone, not least to Mr. Frampton. That kind of success always seems to result in what is refered to in literature as "the critical reaction". Which is a polite way of terming the tear down that inevitably follows massive success. It was easy enough in Frampton"s case when he was cast as the lead in the excreble "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's club Band", a movie so annoyingly bad that when he was contemplating suicide in the bell tower, the audience yelled "JUMP!" And his follow up studio album pushed the single "I'm In You" so hard that most regarded it as a virus or some foreign object that needed to come out as quickly as possible. So most of us regarded him as a pretty boy has been, a satin clothed anachronism that just went away. Only he didn't. Instead he continued putting out the occasional studio album, continued touring and continued getting better and BETTER over the years with that guitar. Most stars of that era have slowed or fallen into predictability or lost interest in everything but the money. Mr. Frampton has invested a lot of his money into getting an astonishing number of tones out of his fretwork and the recent live recordings are proof that he really loves what he does. And he does it so well that different recordings of the same songs at different concerts are just terrific without one being better than the other - just entirely different. So his shows aren't paint by the numbers same old, same old, but unique to themselves. All of them well worth listening to.
