Book Description

March 1998 Instant S
Scriptlets are one of the most exciting features of Internet Explorer 4.0 and represent an excellent way to project DHTML as a development platform. DHTML will be key to the future of windows programming, but it is also important to web developers in general. IE will support DHTML and Scriptlets on Win32, Win3.1, Unix, Mac, WinCE, so Scriptlets and DHTML are not tied to windows in any way. Thus this book is useful for both Windows programmers and web developers. In the future, using HTML or DHTML will become natural, since you don't have to redistribute anything. Just assume that your software (even a desktop application) will run on a Win9x platform. All this wouldn't be so interesting and appealing if developers had to reinvent the wheel every time they needed some DHTML code. But Scriptlets have been introduced just to facilitate HTML code reuse! Consequently, there will be a strong need for good and useful Scriptlet books as soon as people realize what is changing and the direction that programming is going to take

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Instant DHTML Scriptlets covers the exciting and emerging world of reusable scriptlets, which are written in DHTML as reusable components-- similar in spirit to ActiveX controls. Though this is a Microsoft-specific technology, Esposito demonstrates its potential for Web developers and gives you a head start on this exciting technology.

The book begins by situating scriptlets in the world of HTML and DHTML and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0. Scriptlets are written in DHTML but are self-contained and reusable components that can be distributed and reused across projects. The author assumes basic familiarity with HTML and scripting languages VBScript and JavaScript (though an appendix lists the basics of each) and argues effectively in favor of a role for scriptlets.

Subsequent chapters show off the basics of writing simple scriptlets, including an add-on to Visual Studio 97 for a wizard to automate the creation of DHTML scriptlets. Esposito also shows how to use scriptlets inside Visual Basic projects and describes recent advances such as Microsoft's Server Scriptlets.

With backing from Microsoft, the future of scriptlets is bright, and the material in this concise and worthwhile introduction can let you decide whether scriptlets are indeed right for you. --Richard Dragan

From Library Journal

Scriptlets are a step beyond dynamic hypertext mark-up language (HTML). Scriptlets are a way to design new, custom-built objects to extend dynamic HTML. Esposito covers scriptlets on both the client and server sides and on the desktop when used in conjunction with JavaScript, VBscript, and VisualBasic. This book is targeted specifically to programmers who design Windows-based commercial code, not for beginners, but it does address an increasingly important topic. For large collections.

1.0 out of 5 stars Check the index before you buy., October 31, 1999

In my copy of this book and all the other copies I've seen, the index has the wrong page numbers, making the book virtually useless as a reference. Looks like a lapse in Wrox quality control.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lucky for us its pretty good..., February 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Instant Scriptlets (Paperback)
This is a pretty good book...Good thing because its the only book I have found that covers scriptlets exclusively. My only complaint is that the book could have been shorter, but the author has a tendancy to be redundant.

Other than that one minor complaint, good coverage and good examples. Mr. Esposito's writing style may not be my favorite, but he does definately know the material.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good book explaining Scriptlets., June 16, 1998
This review is from: Instant Scriptlets (Paperback)
Perhaps this is the only book published which is exclusively meant for Scriptlets. Even though server scriptlets and Remote scripting are explained, but a little stress (a chapter for each topic) was given. But client scriptlets (DHTML Scriptlets) are explained in detail. Author Dino Esposito tried to explain a lot about the topic in a comprehensive mode, ofcourse the name itself suggests it. Definately it is good book and recommended for beginners and intermediate programmers and a quick review for Advanced programmers.
