5.0 out of 5 stars Great book about documenting processes from a small business coach
I highly recommend this book. It stresses the importance of systematizing your business so you, the owner, can treat it as an asset producing income streams rather than as a mere job. It will help you create systems that run every aspect of your business. This books has great content, but it comes across a bit as a marketing tool for the author's consulting business...

2.0 out of 5 stars Redundant and Rambling..."You just said that!"
I found most of the content to be redundant and rambling. Very hard to focus on the message when he tells a story like my mother....on and on and on....... Points buddy...get to the points. This book should have only taken 40 pages to say what he need to...this was the longest 118 pages I have ever read! Not entirely about systems nor details on the best way to physically...

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing new here, June 23, 2008
This review is from: Instant Systems (Instant Success Series) (Paperback)
This book presents no new ideas. All of Brad Sugars' books are based on ideas that are stolen from other people and packaged in a uniform fashion. This book is simply a rehash of better written books such as The E-Myth Revisited. Don't waste your time.

I highly recommend this book. It stresses the importance of systematizing your business so you, the owner, can treat it as an asset producing income streams rather than as a mere job. It will help you create systems that run every aspect of your business. This books has great content, but it comes across a bit as a marketing tool for the author's consulting business regarding small business coaching. If you are a small business owner, then this book will help you get your business out of your head onto paper.

I love the following quote from the book: "Very few people ever make a fortune running their businesses, but a lot of people make a fortune selling them." You'll only be able to sell your business if you systematize it.

The 4 key areas that can be systematized are:

1. Strategic Planning (budget, measure, evaluate, and take action)
2. Team Building (your people and education)
3. Delivery of Services or Distribution of Product
4. Using Technology (computers, machines, and equipment)

I would have liked the book better if it had been organized by "chapters" rather than "parts." And I think "Part III" should have been broken into the following 4 chapters:

Chapter 4: People and Education
Chapter 5: Delivery and Distribution
Chapter 6: Testing and Measuring
Chapter 7: Systems and Technology

All in all, a great little book to read and study. 5 stars!

1.0 out of 5 stars More fluff than a creme puff, May 3, 2008
By
MPR (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Instant Systems (Instant Success Series) (Paperback)
This book is 106 pages long, but it reads like an outline for a community college Intro to Business lecture. I didn't have high expectations going in, but even with my low bar I was disappointed.

Brad promises "Instant Systems" - an exciting way to automate your business so you can start other automated businesses and flit around the world with your newfound wealth. In reality his book is filled with fluffy paragraphs that are all overview with no specifics. I especially enjoyed his section on how to automate your entire HR process by writing down every "task" in a neat little binder and then hiring a high school student (or equivalent) to implement it. Good luck with that one.

If you put in a lot of time experimenting with the concepts presented in this book, you MAY be able to automate most parts of the most simplistic unskilled businesses (such as small home cleaning services, carwashes, possibly restaurants), but clearly if you get into any kind of larger scale or need to hire (gasp!) college grads with real job skills (biotech, law firm, technology company, etc...), I am confident the "instant systems" approach will instantly disintegrate.

And of course, the book is peppered with shameless self promotion and advertising throughout.

You are better off saving your money for a community college course in business 101.

Interesting and somewhat useful, but not very good. More a generic rehash of already-known factors, and not put together or targeted very well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Instant Systems (Instant Success), September 22, 2008
This review is from: Instant Systems (Instant Success Series) (Paperback)
Invaluable for anyone wanting to create equity in a small business - to take it from one where the owner handles everything, even with employees to implement tasks, to one that operates as a business or system. It is also valuable for consultants and coaches that help businesses do that. At some point a small business owners gets tired or bored with the mechanics and even producing the products of the business. Unless he or she takes the steps and time to put systems in place they will be hamstring by the business when it grows, and will not have develop an organization that has value or can be sold. This book identifies many valuable systems for a small business and can help the owner put them into place.

Instant Sytems will definitely help you fast track your business to success.

From reading this book I learnt how to identify the areas in my business that needed systemizing. I also learnt how to develop, write and implement these effective systems into my business without causing massive panic for my team.

Instant Systems takes the business owner through the 9 steps necessary to systemize ANY business. Each step is methodically explained and follows a logical sequence. I have put the ideas to use in my own business and now I understand that I am destined to repeat every task until I write it down. With every system I create, I realize that I am that much closer to "fool-proofing" the way my business works. This book has been one of the most useful tools I have ever put to work in my business and I recommend it highly to all my friends and colleagues.
