Pip Pyle is, as another reviewer mentioned, much more than just one of the world's best drummers; he's also a first rate composer, although somewhat under-recorded in that capacity. That's why the release of any material by his band Equip'Out (pronounced "Keep Out" I believe?), or his current band Pip Pyle's Bash, is an event to be celebrated.

These 5 long jazzy tunes were recorded in 1994 just after Sophia Domancich left the group and Patrice Meyer came in. Patrice is an absolutely phenomenal guitarist, also too rarely recorded. Not to take anything away from Sophia -- who is herself quite a remarkable keyboardist -- but the energy and excitement that Patrice brought with him kicked Pip and his little band into a whole new arena. By changing the quartet from a "piano quartet" to a "guitar quartet" Pip had to rethink all of his setlist, and it inspired him to take off on some totally new directions which he hadn't visited since writing for Phil Miller some 20 years earlier.

These tracks were recorded live in a Paris club and therefore are less sparkling than a studio disc, though certainly not bad. They document an exciting and musically magical collaboration in the history of British progressive jazz. Elton Dean's alto sax & saxello, and Paul Rogers' electric upright bass fill out the group with their dependable panache.
