We have been told over and over that our present educational system, with its enormous budgets, teachers' strikes, and institutional violence, does not work. In fact, Holt shows that compulsory schooling is mong the most authoritarian and destructive inventions of man. Given this pessimistic view, though, Holt provides sympathetic advice and practical tactics for change throughout this book, including a controversial plan for an underground railroad to get your kids away from the authorities if you are serious about taking them out of the school system.

I read this book when I was in my last year of high school and it helped me to keep a healthy perspective vis a vis education. I ended up being a healthy sceptic of all "authoritative knowledge" "taught" me by my teachers. It also encouraged me to "learn" on my own even after I was done with formal schooling. Must read for people who feel unduly constrained by the educational system.
