Book Description

Since my heart disease diagnosis in 2011 and subsequent quadruple bypass surgery at the age of 40, I have learned a few things.

I had no plan and it ended in a hospital. I do not want to go back.

“This guy's walking down the street when he falls in a hole.

The walls are so steep he can't get out. A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, 'Hey you. Can you help me out?' The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on.

Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up, 'Father, I'm down in this hole can you help me out?' The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on

Then a friend walks by, 'Hey, Joe, it's me can you help me out?' And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, 'Are you stupid? Now we're both down here.'

The friend says, 'Yeah, but I've been down here before, I know the way out.”

My goal is not to write another nutrition book filled with recipes or pictures of my favorite foods. I have not written an “I command you to obey” type of book either. I am of the personality; if you tell me to do something I will probably do the opposite.

I share my experience not in an attempt to persuade. I am not a preacher. I am not a leader. I share only to shed light on these defining moments in a lifetime and the power that exists in harnessing them.

I have come across a course of action, through nutrition, that has extraordinary benefits. But the food is a small part of the overall plan. Simply, having a plan provides extraodinary benefits. My overwhelming motivation is to provide you with the knowledge that a course of action is available when you find yourself in tough circumstances.

I wish someone had given me this book sooner!

In 2011, I could not have imagined my life today. At the age of 40, I was diagnosed with heart disease; four major blockages that if left alone would have ended my life quickly.

I had my chest sawed open. It was singularly the most influential event in my life and in hindsight I would not change a thing. I am glad it happened.

The lightning bolt moments are as rare as a strike of electricity to the head. They either kill you or offer you the opportunity to walk away with a second chance. It is precisely these moments that need to be deconstructed because they happen in an instant. These moments exist a lifetime as either regret or epiphanies.

The reality is, we have no way of knowing how we will exit this world. For some of us, we will lead long full lives and gently succumb in our sleep at a ripe old age. For others it will be a tragic exit, leaving loved ones to question how it could have happened.

However, the majority of us will face the challenge of fighting for our years and it comes down to a simple question.

Do you want to spend your last years in a gradual state of decline both mentally and physically? Or do you want to challenge the odds and finish up on your feet?

Your physical body has very simple needs. It is a fact of biology. Run your body on the core ingredients it needs, run it clean. Don’t let your mind dictate what the body wants. A foundation built on this simple approach will drastically move the odds of avoiding disease in your favor.

Let me help you out of the hole.

Ian Welch

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring March 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
People experiencing a major health problem such as Type II diabetes or some form of cardiovascular disease are often unable to control much of what is happening to them. They can feel lost and somewhat helpless. But there may be a solution. "Instead of Flowers" chronicles the author's experiences and reflections after having open heart bypass surgery at the age of forty. At the end of Chapter 29, he sums it up very simply, "The only thing you can control is the food that goes into your mouth." This book runs through an eclectic array of insights into the food industry and our own misconceptions about food, and is sure to capture your attention causing you to rethink the choices you make day to day. Whether you are healthy today or you are already sick, reconsidering your diet choices may very well save your life. The author is living proof.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Learn The Hard Way March 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As one who survived a heart attack in 2006,I promise that you do not want to risk that experience. After receiving one stent in the "widow maker"artery, I was sent home with the warning that my disease was progressive, but controllable, at least for now. In other words, a death sentence, but probably not today.
That is about what all such patients hear, but is all NOT TRUE.My friendship with Ian and his business partner led me to to the plant food way-of-life in 2011 after Ian's harrowing experience, and since then the changes I have experienced in body weight, blood lipids and other markers are incredible.I also feel that the death sentence was a bit premature, and that I can now fight back effectively against a killer, cardiac artery disease.
Good reading and believe that it works!

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring journey told from the heart May 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I read Ian's story and it has touched me deeply. Our stories are so similar, and somehow we both found our way through the maze to get to the simple and elegant truth that enables both of us to move forward, confident that we have a second chance at life. This time, though, we go forward armed with the truth about food and nutrition that we could not see before. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with a chronic disease, this book can offer hope and encouragement without preaching. When you are ready to embark on your new life, it will provide clarity and get you ready to put your own personal plan in action. It's a quick read and an uplifting story.

Ian, thank you for sharing your journey with us. Thank you for being open and genuine. You survived the lightning strike for a reason, and now many can benefit from your experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars What we should do, why we should do it April 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I'd like to open by thanking Ian for writing this book. I had browsed to Ian's web site, [...], while doing my usual casual research on heart disease. I can relate to Ian-without revealing my own medical history in detail, suffice it to say that I have had a similar experience to Ian's including surgery.
What I know; after all that I've been through, Ian is not only giving you the truth but he is giving you the mental and emotional tools needed to take action and control your own health. Believe me I have tried it both ways. A plant based diet will keep you alive without being totally dependent on pills or worse. Conversely, a meat, cheese and fat based diet will put you under the knife in the OR if you have heart disease.
What you need to know; you can stop and even reverse your heart disease. It is up to you, not the medical pros. Get this book to learn how and why. If you want specific plant based eating plans there are plenty out there (Ian lists book suggestions) but get this book and do what it says to avoid open heart surgery.
A little extra; eat raw garlic every day and use apple cider vinegar. I drink at least 2 glasses of water with 2 tablespoons of ACV every day.
Ian - thank you for the excellent book. I have many books on heart disease prevention; yours gives something that none of the others give-philosophy, companionship and support from someone who has been there. I will be buying multiple copies of it. See you on the blog.

This book is an amazing companion for anyone recovering from a life-altering healthcare event...or anyone who wants to avoid one. The author shares his story through personal anecdotes, hard data and informative parables. It's a great quick and easy read and totally worth it.
