Product Description

Powerline Modem Serial Port

From the Manufacturer

The Serial INSTEON PowerLinc Modem is a serial-based home automation interface that allows PC- and hardware-based automation controllers to control INSTEON-compatible lights, appliances, heating/air conditioning systems and alarm systems directly via the INSTEON network. This home automation interface uses simple RS-232 commands, allowing any device with a programmable serial port to send INSTEON commands easily, making controllers such as SimpleHomeNet's and Universal Devices' IP bridges instantly INSTEON compatible. The dual-band interface sends and receives both powerline and radio frequency (RF) INSTEON signals, so it doubles as an Access Point. This makes it ideal for new INSTEON installs and if have or plan to use an RF-only INSTEON-compatible remote, thermostat, motion sensor and contact sensor. The RF signal can bypass electrical noise or attenuation near the PC and it pulls many of the "distant" INSTEON devices one hop closer, which can expand the size of potential installations into even larger homes and commercial buildings. New features: Built-in Dual-Band with RF function, acts like an Access Point for phase bridging and RF to/from power line; 1023 links (compared to around 800 links previously); Added a beep sounder; Red/Green LED light; Supports faster reading and writing of the PLM's database by another controller; Much lighter weight; No pass-through outlet. Please Note: The controller connected to the Serial INSTEON PowerLinc Modem must remain powered on and running the controller program connected to the controller or host at all times of usage. Additionally, the dual-band interface does not supply power to external devices.

If you have an ISY 99, 994, etc you'll need one of these for the controller to interface with your insteon network. It is a requirement, not just a suggestion. Unfortunately, like many insteon products, they are not reliable in the long term.

To get optimal communication, you should plug it directly into an outlet, with no filtering. These are extremely sensitive though, so they are susceptible to power surges and other electrical issues. Note that I have a good quality whole home surge protector, and every other device (phone, coax, satellite, etc) has multiple surge protection points as well, so I'm about as well insulated as possible. I think they just overheat or wear out.

I've been using them with multiple generations of ISYs and other adapters. On average, expect to have them fail and need to be replaced annually. I tell myself, because the spouse won't laugh at my jokes, that I know it's time to change the smoke alarm batteries every time the PLM dies.

This product has a relatively short lifespan. If you read other reviews you will find others who experienced this as well. This is a serial to Insteon converter that is used to interface a serial device ( ISY or computer and etc ) to an Insteon home automation network. I purchased this to replace the one that failed after about two and one half years. When new it performs its function well. Insteon's quality is improving, with their newest Insteon products becoming more robust. This item, however, needs better hardening, which would if done, would move Insteon from hobbyist use, to more use by those who would install Insteon for general consumer use. This device is for those who have some programming and other computer and electrical skills.

Easy setup and worked as advertised. Used 3 in my setup, no problems with any of them. Many possible uses. Powerline interface uses simple RS-232 commands, allowing any device with a programmable serial port to send INSTEON commands. Unlike other Insteon units, there is no pass though outlet.

I purchased this recently to work with the ISY994i that I also bought. This works perfectly as advertised. It's pricey, but if you're looking to go to the next step with your Insteon setup (ISY etc) this is the item to purchase.

This worked for me past the infamous "2 year + 1 day" period, but not by too much longer.

The manufacture date of my v1.5 hardware is 1130, which I think means the 30th week of 2011. It just failed today which puts it at over 3 years of service, at least since it was built. More like 2.5 years since I purchased it and got it setup.

I read on the Universal Devices forum (they make the ISY controllers) that several people have had good luck by replacing the capacitors on the PCB inside. I'm an electrical engineer by education, but honestly I was never that good at soldering (shaky hands, huge blobs of solder everywhere) but I am tempted to buy the replacement caps and give it a shot. Search online for "2413s repair" and you should find that thread.

Otherwise, Smarthome now has a revision 2 of the hardware which some people are hoping uses more reliable hardware inside as well as fixing some software issues.

At any rate, when these things work, they work well, but I guess you just *HAVE* to knock off a couple stars for the fact that they *WILL* die sooner or later and you'll end up getting a new one.

Considering you basically cannot put these behind a surge protector, you'd think they'd spend the extra dollar to get some high quality parts in there to prevent blowouts from minor power events, or from heat related problems, etc. I'd pay an extra dollar if that meant it lasted 4 years instead of 2.

Well. Another unit, and another 2 years (almost to the day). These units are cheaply made, and either burn out, or are overly susceptible to minor, everyday surges. I am an electrician, and have seen cheaper devices, with more delicate components last for well over 10 years. If Smarthome would simply put a little more effort into the design, I would happily pay $200 for a unit that would work for 5+ years, as opposed to changing them out every year or so at $80.

I think this PowerLinc Modem has a built-in timer to immediately cause this unit to fail at the end of the warranty period. I've had two of them fail on me so far right around the 2 year mark. Shortly before this modem dies, the following "symptoms" occur:
- Some devices fail to respond to on/off request, while other devices work perfectly fine.
- Some devices fail to report back their status (for example, a lamp appears "off" even though it's really on).
- Only half the devices in a "scene" turn on or off.
Eventually, everything in your smart home stops working, and you're back to a "dumb" house.

However, the SmartHome company has been good about exchanging these units for a replacement, even if I was slightly past the warranty period. So for the good service, I still give this 3 stars.
