First I need to clarify two things. One-I am not an Oprah fan at all. I've tried because so many of my closest friends and family member love her, but for some reason she grates on my nerves. Two-I am not religious. In the slightest. I would say that I am spiritual and I do believe in God but I am not religious.
So with that being said I was shocked when flipping through the channels I saw Oprah's life class and Reverend Jakes and something he said hit home with me. I didn't know who he was but even when he made reference to religion that didn't stop me because what he had to say was powerful. When the show was over I came to Amazon to order the book and had it the next day when it was released. I read it in one sitting and while a lot of what he said on the show is the same in the book there is also more. He tells you directly that he cannot tell you how to solve your problems or fix your life what he can tell you is what he believes and what he sees in his work. While I loved the book I didn't love his constant reference to all the celebrity dropping that he did (not by name but rather by things like, "A famous Hollywood actress") but even with that being said I still gave it five stars.

The main idea of the book is simple-step back and take a look at your life. What things do you do, what things do you believe, simply because you've been told to? We are all brainwashed (in my line of work we call it enculturation) and it's how we're raised. It's what tells us to look both ways before we cross the street, it's what tells us that we're supposed to grow up, go to college, get married, have kids, retire and move to Florida. It's what society and our families do to help us fit into the place where we are born.

I must admit I love to read books. When I went to the bookstore to get the book I sat in the parking lot for a few minutes reading through the pages. This book grabbed my attention so much so that I think I sat there for a good half hour - finally unwillingly pulling myself away and putting the book down. I knew I had things that needed to get down before the day was finished. I stopped at the grocery and sat in their parking lot for another 15 or so minutes. I think I could have just sat in my car and read till my heart was content.

Everything in is this book spoke to me. I have often said many times - there has to be more. I have felt that in my being so much so that it makes me very uncomfortable when I settle for just the smallest inkling of comfortable. It pulls, it tugs - instinct. Yes I believe we are all created for something more than we allow to come to fruition. We settle at times because it is a place within that seems so seemingly unreachable or too out there. We reside within the limitation of what people say we should or shouldn't do. We overide possibilties with data, information and or circumstances.

I like how he pulls everything together! Once we to learn to use what we have on the inside with what we know (information) you create an unstoppable force to be reckoned with.

I almost completed this book in one sitting. A great read indeed! Don't be afraid to activate your instinct.

I read 75% of this book yesterday, and failed to read 100% of it because it was 2 A.M. and I needed to get to sleep. Like the other review, I am not necessarily a follower of Mr. Jakes, but the title of this book caught my attention after I saw someone on Facebook post about it. And I must say-I am blown away.

Many of the things I thought about in regards to my own life, this book touched on. Even if that were not the case, the book is superbly written. As a writer myself I love words and imagery, and the verbiage used in this book is not superfluous or unnecessary-his descriptions paint a vivid picture of the message he is trying to convey. And the parts where people are claiming that he is bragging about knowing famous people, and dining with them, etc? Well those types of people are on his level, and most visible and known to most of us. If would've talked about Joe Schmoe from Dallas, TX, who has applied these principles and thoughts to his own life, it would not resonate as much. As nice as a person as Joe Schmoe is, it won't resonate, nor can anyone witness his story in real life if he is unfamiliar to everyone but Mr. Jakes. The celebrity references are used as examples, and ain't nothin' wrong with that.
Lastly, the book does not come off as preachy. I was hesitant at first, thinking that it would be chock full of references to Biblical verses, etc-but it really isn't. It's just straight forward talk about how to recognize and capitalize on your instincts that will move you forward into being a greater, fully developed version of YOURSELF. This is good stuff; the inner instinct he discusses is REAL. 75% in and I feel this book is worth EVERY. PENNY.

"Instinct" has mentally launched me into believing I can know, with clarity, what God designed me for. I feel - instinctively...consistent happiness and fulfillment are knocking at the door. It's time to answer!!! Highly recommended.
