Book Description

June 1996
A charming, unique confession of one mans radical transformation through eating exclusively whole raw foods. Zephyr delves boldly into the organismic core of our relationship with food, unearthing a diet that is profoundly pleasurable, truly healthy, and utterly ecological. He completes his vision by integrating instinctive eating with permaculture and tribal community. Instructive, inspirational, idealistic, yet clearly practical. It is the only book by an American author about Instinctive Eating.

Review

If you have ever swiped a sweet sapote, marauded the meat of mangoes, or pilfered a pack of papayas, check it out. Zephyr, master forager and brilliant communicator, creates an inspiring 'instincto' guide for those disenchanted with modern diet, disheartened by western medicine and discovering the need for something more. He tells his own story of growing up in a white bread world, discovering discontentment, grappling with obsessive eating and finally transitioning "back to instinct". Thoroughly based on personal experience, Zephyr's tale deals with his journey of transition through occasional pizzas and cooked food addiction^to his now-permacultured roots in Pahoa, Hawaii. There are a few 'interesting' chapters on instinctive meat and insect eating that may quease the faint of heart; but overall, the book is nicely constructed and Zephyr's no nonsense "pleasure is the measure" attitude sprawls flagrantly across the page. Ripe persimmons sprout of lettuce leaf pages a! nd honey water drizzles down your gullet along with sweet morsels of thought. Zephyr answers all questions the prospective instincto might have, raises a few more, and instills within one and all^a finer, tantric desire for fruit. -- Susie Bohannon of The Living Planet, Maui, HI

4.0 out of 5 stars Sounds crazy, but..., October 11, 2002
This review is from: Instinctive Eating: The Lost Knowledge of Optimum Nutrition (Paperback)
I was given this book to read by a Raw Foodist friend of mine, and began it with a huge truckload of salt poised behind me. From the cover, the premise, and the author's pseudonym, I expected some flaky, ivory-tower bore. Instead I found it to be at turns hilarious, thought-provoking, rivetingly surreal (see the passage where the author recounts killing a chicken with his bare hands and immediately eating the still pulsing meat), and consistently well-written, a delight to read. And persuasive...I almost considered becoming an Instincto myself!

All in all it's definitely worth the exposure to a lifestyle and philosophy you would otherwise never come across anywhere else. Fascinating to consider, much harder to actually turn your own life upside down and practice it.

I give it 4 stars only because the author doesn't spend as much time as he should addressing the concrete logistical barriers that most readers would find in adopting such a diet---Zephyr lives in what sounds like an Edenic commune of like-minded instinctos in Hawaii, and it shows at times.

2.0 out of 5 stars Go on instinct or stick to a diet?, May 19, 2009
This review is from: Instinctive Eating: The Lost Knowledge of Optimum Nutrition (Paperback)
I ate an RVAF diet very similar to the one Ano (aka Zepher) advocates and got into a tremendous mess with parasites, heavy metals, bacteria and all the fun that follows that. Save yourself the trouble. Just go to Mexico and get some of the lovely venganza de Moctezuma instead. You'll have plenty of diarrhea and end up on antibiotics either way though. Raw food diets are ridiculous and this one is no exception. They're all based on the false premise that parasites (of all kinds) either don't exist, are harmless or even beneficial. I found out the hard way that this is wishful thinking. But don't take my word for it. The medical cartel is ready to cash in on your misery when you end up on Flagyl or whatever. Peace
