5.0 out of 5 stars Voices from the land of Baikal and the Sayan Mountains, July 26, 2000
This review is from: Instrumental & Vocal Music From Buryatia (Audio CD)
I am writing this review as someone who knows the artist and knows the culture from which he comes. The Buryats in southern Siberia have an ancient culture and are famous for their shamanic traditions. Sayan Jambalov is a very talented musician and he and the other members of Uragsha have done an excellent job in presenting the music of the Buryat people. This recording is unique, for there are no other albums of Buryat music available outside of Russia. This album presents the music styles of yohor, magtaal, and hoomei, which are connected with the shamanic traditions of the Buryats. I recommend this album to anyone interested in Mongolian, Central Asian, or Siberian music, as well as to those who are interested in shamanism. Furthermore the excellent musicianship of the artists of Uragsha will be appreciated by anyone who is interested in world music. This is a great album that has been needed for a long time!
