Book Description

0415972094 978-0415972093 April 5, 2005
Mexico's "democratic transition" has created a competitive electoral system and a formally plural state. Besides, a peculiar wave of insurgency, started in 1994, has challenged the alleged moderating effect of democratic transition. This book argues that socioeconomic inequality is the main factor behind this combination of democratic and undemocratic trends.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must have for those who are interested in Mexico, March 4, 2010
This review is from: Insurgency, Authoritarianism, and Drug Trafficking in Mexico's Democratization (Latin American Studies: Social Sciences & Law) (Hardcover)
This is a really complete book on Mexico's obstacles to democratization. I'm from Italy and I've been studying Mexico for my thesis: this is the best book I've read to get to understand this country and its unsolved problems. It explains insurgency and drug trafficking with the lack of democracy and socioeconomic equality, challenging the mainstream litterature on democratization with a very documented plot of themes and facts. It also provides an interesting solution, based on a redistributive agenda. Even if time has gone on and the drug wars have been getting worse and worse after the publication of this book, it's also very useful to explain the current "state of siege" of Mexico.

Unless you're a Mexico policy wonk or a college student, there's no reason to buy this book. It's ridiculously priced, tiny, and difficult to read.
Having said that, it IS detailed and presents an interesting perspective on the current crisis in Mexico. It also provides an interesting solution.
But BOY is it expensive.
