As a native English speaker and fluent French speaker Chinese was a great challenge. The Cheng-Tsui Integrated Chinese series is excellent. The books provide a clear, coherent and well-written guide to learning Chinese reading, writing, speaking and cultural education.

There is a consistent set of characters you follow through subject-related lessons. Travel words, food, finding an apartment, seeing tourist sites, etc.

The book has a set of great indices/vocabulary lists at the back of the book. One gives English->Pinyin and the other gives Pinyin->English.

My class used the whole series of textbook, workbook, character workbook and online audio exercises.

After 6 months of studying I spent a month in China. Great trip thanks to this book series!

One note of caution: Books are available in traditional and simplified. Make sure you buy the one you/your course requires.

This series was written for college students but it is also good for high school students as well. My son is a freshman in high school and he likes this series much better than the other books he had before. He finds the content more interesting and the format is easier to follow. The language notes and culture highlights are excellent.

I was very satisfied with the price of these workbooks. I am Chinese American and I want my children to know how to write Chinese so I think these books are very helpful for that. Thank you very much! 谢谢!

I used this book for an advanced introduction to Chinese course at my university. This textbook's choice of vocabulary and sentence structures are amazing and incredibly useful. It's well organized into chapters, and my Chinese improved quickly. Since each chapter revolves around certain topics, though, my Chinese in topics not covered did not improve by much.

However, I believe that some grammar sections, such as those on the le particle, are confusing and out of place in certain chapters. I also found a few simplified Chinese characters in the traditional Chinese section in each chapter, but these mistakes rarely become an issue if you're careful. This book would be especially useful for people who hope to learn both simplified and traditional Chinese.

I love this series of books. I started learning Mandarin (simplified characters) through school last September, but I wanted to get ahead this summer so I took it upon myself to continue. I wanted to transition to traditional characters and this book helped be do just that. I don't have the recordings which makes it a little difficult, but I manage. Sometimes characters are used before they're introduced but that's ok, I use a Chinese-English dictionary on my phone to translate things and it's fine. The lessons are clear, themed, and systematic. My only complaint is that in the 5 chapters I've covered, I feel like the majority of the grammar was just review (though people who didn't use the first two books in the series might beg to differ). Overall good book.

The book feels like a step up from teh previous books in this series. At first glance after reading through the last book in the series, it felt a bit overwhelming with the increased emphasis on characters including the introduction of some traditional characters. However, the book takes you through the characters slowly and pretty well as the others in the series. It's a decent book for continuing to learn Chinese.

As a teacher of Mandarin, it is very difficult to find a suitable teaching text. This is the best one I've come across. It can be adapted to a variety of age groups, but it assumes foundation in characters and must be supported by textbooks that teach characters specifically. For that, I recommend "The Way of Chinese Characters: The Origins of 400 Essential Words."

I absolutely loved using this book, it's very well written, up to date and relevant. The exercises are all very helpful, and the lessons are usually structured in a way that makes it easy for me to go through. Best of all, the authors clearly have a sophisticated grasp of English too, so they don't make mistakes that some other textbooks do.

Integrated Chinese is the best book for learning Chinese. I've bought all the ones prior to this book, as well.
The only issue is that all the characters from the old book apparently died on vacation, which was depressing... And the traditional smashed in with the simplified made it harder to read.

This book is a major improvement to previous levels of this same series. The grammar section is logically placed after the vocab section of which there is only one now. The inclusion of both simplified and traditional now is great. Great book for learning Chinese.
