The book itself is an effective, methodical way to learn Mandarin. Its system is very clear to follow, and builds vocabulary, grammar, and reading and writing in a thought-through logical way.

I've found that I had to tape a Mandarin speaking friend reading all of the dialogs and grammar notes in the book for me to use, because the book did not come with any audio, unfortunately.

This book does a great job of introducing a difficult and complex language like Chinese to a beginning student like me. While there are some vocabulary words and phrases that I would never find myself using quite yet, the vast majority of it is very relevant to normal conversation, particularly amongst college students. There's also a great chapter on dating where you can learn how to reject someone!
