Book Description

September 30, 2008
Integrated coastal zone management is a process of good governance that guides decision-making on the equitable allocation and sustainable use of natural resources. Integrated Planning and Management of Natural Resources describes systematic planning procedures for writing a hierarchy of strategic, zoning, management, and action plans. These plans can be adapted to any coastal management area in order to realize the social, economic, and environmental benefits that can be derived from spatially allocating, developing, and regulating the use of its diverse natural resources.

4.0 out of 5 stars Resources management finally enters governance mainstream, November 26, 2008
This review is from: Integrated Planning and Management of Natural Resources: A Guide to Writing Sustainable Development Plans for Tropical Coastal Areas (Paperback)
This book Integrated Planning and Management of Natural Resources: A Guide to Writing Sustainable Development Plans for Tropical Coastal Areas is the first reference text that I've seen which actually describes a set of logical procedures for doing integrated resources planning, and that outlines the underlying principles involved with practicing good environmental governance. A unique aspect of this book is its focus on establishing the legal framework and institutional arrangements necessary for undertaking coordinated decision-making among a variety of government, business and community organizations that have overlapping interests in how natural resources are used.

Because of the competing human interests and potential for conflicts over use of space and resources in complex coastal environments, the insights on effective management planning and the methods for spatially allocating resources into superzones, zones and subzones are particularly valuable.

The book is very well structured; and although it is mainly directed towards management of tropical coastal areas, it is essential reading for any student of applied natural resources management. If any future editions are planned, I feel that many subsections would benefit from further explanation and a wider selection of practical examples.
