Book Description

Recognizing that draping, drafting, and drawing are the combined elements necessary for
designing garments, Abling and Maggio integrate these three techniques the way they are
practiced in the industry. In each chapter, illustrations and photographs show a combination
of skills and the natural flow between them. Instructions for producing patterns
and slopers for parts of a garment skirts, bodices, necklines and collars, and sleeves are
presented along with variations for students to understand how to drape, draft, and draw
completed dresses. The concluding chapter presents a gallery of drawings of examples from
twentieth century designer, Donald Brooks. His designs, timeless in their execution and
fabrication, provide an inspiring model. The entire chapter is devoted to drawing exercises
focused on rendering his design and also depicts the relationship that exists among
draping, drafting, and drawing exemplified in the images throughout this extraordinary
studio reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Work, January 31, 2011
This review is from: Integrating Draping, Drafting, and Drawing (Spiral-bound)
I really needed a good reference for my job. After research, this book made my short list. I read thru all the reviews and ordered this book and it is very good.

First things first: this is NOT a "rough" book. It measures up to most books I use regularly. Please ignore that review if possible.

Pros: this book is very personal. It has the feel of someone that is speaking to me. I like the fact that it is written by more than one person. The projects they select are interrelated closely - I guess that's the 'Integrating' part, and it works well.

I am a bit technical, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but this book is very specific and measured.

The instructions are clear, but you have to follow them from the beginning. If you cannot follow instructions, you just might not be able to do this work.

Cons: The pages are a bit thin for my taste. It's such a shame that the publisher couldn't pony up for better paper. I have worked in the publishing industry and I know from first hand experience that the authors get *no* choice about this kind of detail. If they refuse, the publisher simply moves on to the next author. I have seen one or two authors go on to self-publish at enormous self expense with little or not return. (see my comment on the "rough" review to the diva)

----------

This book goes firmly on my shelf. It's an excellent reference with a long life ahead of it.
Thank you for writing this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rough, September 18, 2009
This review is from: Integrating Draping, Drafting, and Drawing (Spiral-bound)
I have to use this book for sewing class and I hate it. I love to sew and drape, but even though it gives you pictures it's NOT detailed. For instance: measure 1'' and fold. okay, but measure from what point and fold where? It is also quite flimsy binding (something I'd see in a notebook) so it's beyond me why it's so expensive other than pure greed.
I only bought this book because I had to.
