5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Pricey Processor...But Worth The Money June 28, 2014
Verified Purchase
Intel Core i7 processors can be quite pricey; at least I consider processors within the $300 price range to be pricey. But if you're looking to build a computer that will operate in the long run (and use up less Wattage), Intel would be your best bet. I'm using this processor for a gaming computer, but I anticipate doing video editing (some time in the future...I think).

But even if I weren't doing video editing (I keep reading that Intel processors are recommend for that), I also intended my computer to be a reliable workstation, in addition to playing games. This processor is so friggin' fast.

I'll grant that even for basic work, it's over-powered, but I'd rather have that than under-powered. Hopefully, this processor will last in the long run.

Be aware, though, that this processor is not accompanied with a "K" (an indicator that it is unlocked for overclocking). Nevertheless, I didn't see any need to overclock, even for playing computation-intensive games like Crysis. (The Graphics Card would be the determinant factor...I think.)

P. S.: The Intel Stock Cooling Fan that came with the processor is quite reliable...and...I think quiet. (It's brand new.) I could tell because I was using silent Enermax fans. So far, it has had no problems since three weeks go when it was installed into my system. Unless you're into overclocking, this cooling fan should be adequate...maybe a little more than adequate for the job. It's quite easy to install because it's got it's own thermal paste installed on the heatsink base; if you're not sure how to install it, do a dry run because if you installed it wrong, you have to clean off the paste and re-apply it again. Do a dry-run installation to avoid the hassle; but if there's a plastic covering, be sure to remove it before installation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Speedy! June 12, 2014
By CL

This was an upgrade for me from an Intel 2500K. The 2500K is pretty darn fast, and the difference with basic applications like Internet browsing is not much. But now Adobe Photoshop and InDesign definitely load up and can do complex tasks faster. And so fast, I can't imagine that an overclocked 4770K would offer anything more.

Using this with an ASUS Z87M-PLUS motherboard and 8GB of ram.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast and cool June 10, 2014
By Keith
I was origanlly going to buy the 4770k until I did a little research on this cpu. I didn't really need to oc like i did with my other cpu's. I've read stats on the 4770k being oc abouve 4.1 and they start to degrade because of the silicon. In a lot of cases they start losing performance. This CPU runs nice and cool. Plus it is Z97 compatible. I run photo edits and video editing software. This this is a beast at rendering. Although i will need to upgrade my GPU to get faster rendering on videos. For photos, this thing pops then right out. As fast as this thing preforms with a SSD, there isn't no need to OC IMO. I do believe this will keep its performance for years to come. Stock fan does need to be upgraded like all stock fans. That being said, It will get the job done

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast June 19, 2014
By JS

Fast, easy, fast.

Its fast, did I say that already?

Had the stock cooler, ran fine at about 70-80 degrees Celsius during load. This temperature worried me slightly so I purchased the EVO 212 Cooler Master cooler. Now runs around 40-50 degrees Celsius under load.

Perfect for people who dont want to worry about over clocking. And its still top of the line with out clocking higher. Price is perfect as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great so far June 26, 2014

I built my first computer and did not want to deal with OC. After a boat load of research I was able to piece everything together based on how I planned on approaching it. I did pair the i7-4790 Processor with an MSI Micro Z97M Gaming mobo and will be running SLI with two GTX 780s in the near future. I am running on a single Geforce GTX 760 at the moment. The overall experience so far has been great. The computer boots in roughly 5 seconds. I have no issues running multiple programs to include videos along with games for assistance. This is required for some quests in Elders Scrolls Online. So far the experience is great. I will however update my review once I install the two new GPU's and start running SLI on 2 screens. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask questions. Just understand I am not an expert and please do your research prior to purchasing this Processor. If you are looking to overclock... Do not buy it. Go for the i7-4790k if that is the case.

Considering I upgraded from a Core 2 Duo from 2009, my Bitfenix PC build uses this processor - one I am very impressed with.

I'm not planning on OClocking, so this processor fits the bill fine! 4 Cores, with two threads per core (so its technically 8 core), and an integrated HD graphics chip (I'm upgrading to a Radeon R9 290X I won at an online auction) which can support many programs without even causing the cpu usage to go over 5% at a time!

This is a great processor! If 1/2GHz means everything to you, then you should spend slightly more for the K version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good so far, many tests to come! July 31, 2014
By Nick K.
Ah the Intel i7 4790, a true beauty, clocked at 4 GHz, this beast keeps my PC running at top speeds! the PC I have this set up in is a custom made PC consisting of: Intel Core i7-4790, Nvidia GTX 780 with an ACX cooler superclocked to 1000 MHz, 8GB RAM DDR3 2133, Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI ATX LGA1150 Motherboard, Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive, Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive. One thing to not you do need the Z97X motherboard if you want to plug the processor in right away, you can also use a Z96, but you then need to update the firmware on the MOBO. For basic gaming on my system, it is actually my RAM that bottlenecks my performance, When playing BF4, I get over 144 Hz, and use less than 25% of my overall CPU usage. Where this really comes in handy is when I am rendering Footage, because then it uses all 100% of the processor, rendering a 45 min video at 1080p 30 FPS, straight from fraps, using Window's Movie Maker(because it's free and easy to use), takes ~15 minutes, which is a significant improvement over the i7 4770 I had in my Lenovo Y500. so far I have yet to have any issues with this, all the cores are unparked, and no issues so far!
