Customer Reviews

It appears to be solidly built, it's quiet, looks great, and has been working very well for me.

The ZBOX was also surprisingly loud because of its one tiny fan- it wasn't grating, but you could definitely hear it from across the room.

You should now be able to install Windows 7 from your USB flash drive without the same problems I had.

There seems to be a lot of confusion and conflicting information about the new Intel Haswell NUC devices. I hope my review will help some people to make a decision about this product. This is a barebones computer meaning that you yourself must buy and add parts to make it work. That requires some research to make sure you are buying the correct parts for the job. You must buy 1.35v RAM, you must pay attention to the height of the hard drive, and you must note the connections on your monitor.

I purchased the Intel D54250WYKH i5 NUC that can accommodate a laptop hard drive. I thought the i5 would help future-proof the device. I am using it as a HTPC DVR, and replaced my old HTPC DVR with this. It is hooked up to a TV (actually AV receiver) via HDMI. I purchased 8 gig of Crucial 1.35v RAM, an Intel 525 mSATA SSD, a Western Digital 1 TB Red HDD and a copy of Windows 7 Professional.

During my research I came across several posts that recommended a certain order in which to install all the software. I started the build by installing the SSD and the RAM. I left out the HDD just so I wouldn't get confused when installing Windows. The very first thing I did was to update my BIOS to the newest version on Intel's website. Second, I plugged in my USB DVD drive and installed Windows 7. Next I installed the Intel® Chipset Device Software and then the Intel® Management Engine driver. After that I installed the other drivers. The computer has to restart for a few of the driver installations. I then installed the Western Digital hard drive, booted up and installed all of the Windows Updates. There were no problems at all, everything went smooth.

I opened up Windows Media Center and discovered that my Harmony remote worked just fine.

Received today, 02/24/2014, and I'm quite impressed so far.

Installing Windows 7 was a bit tricky. I've had this problem before with UEFI BIOS. You're going to need a 4GB or larger USB flash drive, a Windows 7 ISO image file, and the "Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool" available from [...]. Follow the tool's instructions from the Microsoft download site. Unfortunately the utility formats the USB drive as NTFS, which will cause Windows 7 setup problems. So, once the USB/DVD tool finishes, you will need to copy the contents of the USB drive to a folder on a 2nd computer, reformat the USB drive as FAT32, and copy the files back. A 4GB flash drive will have just enough leftover free space to include the Intel NUC drivers. You should now be able to install Windows 7 from your USB flash drive without the same problems I had.

02-26-2014 Update:

It looks like Amazon blocks links in reviews, so you will need to do a web search to find the Window 7 DVD/USB Tool. The original review has the full name of the tool, so a quick web search should help you find it.

Yesterday I swapped out the SODIMM memory modules I used during the initial build. The ones I bought for this build arrived weeks ago, so I swapped them with the memory I had in my laptop, just to make sure they worked. The NUC now has a full 16GB (max) of RAM (G.Skill F3-1600C9D-16GRSL).

I'm using a wired network connection so the 1/2 length mini PCIe slot is empty. In the full length slot I have an Intel 530 240GB mSATA SSD. I also have a HGST 1.5 TB HDD connected to the SATA port. This is currently the largest capacity HDD you can find that will fit property in the SATA cage.

After allowing Windows 7 to start and idle for 30 minutes, the NUC is only drawing 6.

I purchased this NUC and added the following components to turn it into a killer XBMC / Ubuntu media center:

* Crucial M500 120GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive CT120M500SSD3
* Intel Network 6235AN.HMWWB Centrino WiFi Card Half Mini PCI Express Advanced-N 6235 Dual Band Bluetooth
* HVR850 USB2 Tv Stick Tuner
* Crucial 4GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory Module CT51264BF160B
* an external USB 2.0 HDD, keyboard, and IR receiver I had lying around

Unpacking went great- the NUC is very nicely packaged. The box has a little "surprise" when you open it the first time... and the second time... and the third time, etc... I don't want to spoil it for you, but believe me, you'll understand, and it gets a little annoying after a while. The physical design of the NUC is great, and a joy to work with- very sturdy, modular, and easy to access and install components with just a single screwdriver. It only took a minute or two to install the SSD, WiFi card, and RAM.

Installation was a little rocky at first because of a BIOS bug, but once I updated the BIOS it was a breeze. The BIOS is months out of date out of the box, and will not recognize Linux partitions. You must update it before installing anything other than Windows.
