I've used this 45 nm 3.16 GHz Wolfdale Core 2 Duo E8500, on my home built computer last year. The performance of this CPU is more than three times than that of the Pentium 4 at 3.4 GHz overall. Because of the limitation of my PC 6400 DDR2 RAM and perhaps motherboard, I wasn't able to overclock this by much. I settled on a slight overclocking of 3.2 GHz. At this setting, the computer is just as stable as the stock setting. Besides the speed, I noticed how remarkably cool the CPU runs as compared to the Pentium 4. At a prolonging hundred percent CPU loading, the true core temperature doesn't get above 62°C using the stock skimpy Intel heatsink and fan. To measure the core temperature I use this free software Realtemp.

Because this CPU has 6 MB on-chip shared cache memory between the 2 cores, it works extremely well for multitasking as compared to the Pentium 4. One nice feature I really like about this processor is the Enhanced Intel Speed Step which saves electricity by under clocking the processor when heavy processing power is not needed at the moment. The processor selects multipliers varying between 6 to 9 1/2, depending on CPU load. Also, the CPU core voltage varies based on CPU load from a high of 1.2 V to a low of about 0.8V. The maximum power dissipation on this processor is 65 W but 56 W according to Sandra benchmarking software.

I really enjoy using this computer as compared to any of my previous one. This is especially true when it comes to computer maintenance. Unlike a computer with a single core, maintenance chores get done much sooner such as running Spybot, disk cleanup or VirusScan.

This CPU has a great cost/performance ratio. While I do not overclock, it runs at 3.17 Ghz on an ASUS P5Q mother board with 4 gigs of CORSAIR DDR2 800 speed ram. While I did not have any problems loading Vista Home Premium, if your verson is not SP-1, then only have 2 gigs of ram onboard at the time of install and do not increase it to 4 gigs until SP-1 installs. Also, the P5Q series of mother boards is very new and while it does take advantage of all of the features of the Intel E8500 CPU, one of the first things you need to do is upgrade the BIOS to the lastest available from ASUS. With these cautions, you will have a blazing fast system that is in a moderate price range.

This is an excellent cpu. I have a Gigabyte EP45-UD3L motherboard and it overclocks so easily on air. I have it running at 4.18GHz with 440MHz bus speed voltage upped to 1.45V. Runs stable and fast. I had no intention of overclocking it when i got it. Just a work computer that is occasionally used for games, video etc. Temperatures were so low using Coolermaster Hyper n520 (25C/45C) that I decided to try overclocking. Now, overclocked by over 1GHz, temperatures are 37C/60C. No problems.

I bought this CPU to replace an old Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.73 single CPU that was constantly overheating. I'm very, very pleased with this CPU, runs very fast with dual core, and very cool due to 45 nm chipset. This runs on an ASUS P5Q motherboard (great motherboard) and runs very cool and fast. Add in the Zalman CPU cooler CNPS9700 with blue LED and you will not go wrong. Best CPU for the bang for the buck perspective. Very happy!

i had a E6600 at 3.2gh and it was starting to get old and i wanted to upgrade to be good for more years to come ,
so i bought this E8500 ,and i overclocked it to 4.2gh yes 4.2 and it took me maybe 5 min , for you who wants to know
which stepping it is , it is actually the brand new E0 ,so the best E8500 chip so far created , and very easy to overclock,
of course you have to know what to do to overclock but it is easy for those who know ,,, isn't it , but if you learn
little bit and start playing with it you can come up with incredible performance for cheap ,,
and 4.2 ghz has been achieved with stock voltage , i didn't change it .
please don't buy the E8600 it is more than $100 over the E8500 and you will have the exact same
overclocking possibilities ,and if you want to buy the E8400 which is only $15 less than the E8500
why not buying the E8500 and start with 3.16 gh already....

here are my specs =

EVGA 680i
E8500 E0 4.2 giga
EVGA GTX 275 FTW 713 mhz
4 giga MEM ram kingston 800 mhz 5.5.5.12
2 x 300 giga hard drive
2 x dvd DL rom
CORSAIR TX 620w

to tell you the truth , i saw a small improvement from the E6600 overclocked on windows itself
but on games was another story , it is very amazing ...

i hope i gave you all the details for you to buy it ,,

Upgraded from an E6420 to this E8500. Besides the speed / performance improvements I noticed mostly the much smaller cooler that comes with this almost double the speed processor. It's only about half as thick as the E6420 cooler and much lighter. No copper core either. It still keeps the CPU sufficiently cool even after a full run of Futuremark benchmarks! So the new design must create a lot less heat while greatly improving performance. Good job INTEL!
