3.0 out of 5 stars A Win98 Camera, So Far
Earlier this year, I purchased this camera for a Win98 machine, and was very pleased. I had it up and running in five minutes, and for the price, the clarity and performance under less-than-optimal lighting conditions were remarkable. The bundled software was a good value, too. So then (the plot thickens) I bought it for a Win2K machine, not realizing the camera, in...

5.0 out of 5 stars Intel PC Camera Deluxe, August 15, 2001

This review is from: Intel Deluxe USB Camera (Personal Computers)
I am extremley pleased with my intel deluxe pc camera, afew months ago, i had the option of the intel deluxe or a cheaper alternative, i ended up buying the logitech quickcam express ($30) and i was extremley dissapionted with this, as it only came with afew basic programs and the pictures on the box were nothing to do with the camera and the picture quality was so poor it was difficult to make out what the image was and the camera offered little support to low light situations. I thought that mabe it was just my camera but internet reviews show that other buyers were just as dissapointed with there identical cameras. After 5 months i decided to buy a more expensive camera (Intel Deluxe) for $59 (curcuit city) and i was extremley impressed with everything about it, the picture quality is like looking into a mirror and it came with more software than you could shake a stick at!, I set the camera up in under 3 minutes and i was having online video confrencing using 'Netmeeting'(included)in 10 minutes. This camera is deffinatley good value for money and an excellent camera. The only slight drawback is that it was not compatible with windows 2000, so to overcome this problem i downloaded the win2000 drivers from the intel site but currently there is no way to get the included software to work with win2000 but it is shortly expected but i used the camera on my win98 pc and it worked perfectly!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera!, February 22, 2001
This review is from: Intel Deluxe USB Camera (Personal Computers)
Worth its value! You can take neat pictures and email them to friends and familty. For net conferencing you will need a high speed modem and fairly good system (PIII and 128MB ram).It does not work with winNT only win95/98/Me.Computer hangs if you have any other camera software installed.Uninstall it before installing this camera. On a whole very simple to use and worth its price.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Win98 Camera, So Far, September 5, 2001
This review is from: Intel Deluxe USB Camera (Personal Computers)
Earlier this year, I purchased this camera for a Win98 machine, and was very pleased. I had it up and running in five minutes, and for the price, the clarity and performance under less-than-optimal lighting conditions were remarkable. The bundled software was a good value, too. So then (the plot thickens) I bought it for a Win2K machine, not realizing the camera, in August of 2001, wasn't Win2K-ready. The website provided Win2K drivers which allowed the camera to work (I tested it with Netmeeting and a demo version of Webcam32), but the performance was greatly disappointing. The camera flickered like a dying monitor, and the focus was muddy. I reluctantly returned the camera (feeling at loose ends due to the negative reviews on Amazon of nearly every other webcam except the discontinued 3Com!).

The Intel website notes that the software package for Win2k will be available on Sept 17. I liked this camera so much on the Win98 machine that if the software really does become available, I might buy it again from a company with a respectable return policy (like Amazon), and hope that the flickering was truly a mechanical problem and not a permanent Win2K conflict. I may also look for an updated video-card driver, just in case an old driver compounded the performance issue.

Conclusion? If you have Windows 98, go for it. Excellent quality for the price, and a no-brainer to set up. If you have Windows 2000 and you're interested in this camera, wait til Intel delivers on producing its software bundle for the Win2k platform, then buy it from a place that has a consumer-friendly return policy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware Window's XP users, December 1, 2001
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Intel Deluxe USB Camera (Personal Computers)
I purchased two of these cameras and am unable to use either one because both my computers use Window's XP. The software that comes with the camera DOES NOT work or even install if you are running XP. You have to go to Intel's website and purchase an upgrade CD (...). Although you can take snapshots with the standard Window's XP driver and take some video clips with the MS Movie Maker, your options are VERY limited unless you purchase the upgrade CD.

Just a fair warning to help you avoid the anger and frustration I experienced when trying to install the camera.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reliable Item, February 2, 2001
This review is from: Intel Deluxe USB Camera (Personal Computers)
This camera works well for taking pictures and making videos. It' s online usage requires a high rate of speed though and picture rate isn't the greatest. But you can see fine and it is a descent item.

I was very pleased with this camera. Installation was simple and quick. Quality was excellent. Still learning all the extras I can do with this camera. I would recommend this camera to my friends and family.........do not waste your money on the cheaper versions as you wouldn't be satisfied with them and end up purchasing this one after all

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value and clear images, January 1, 2002

This camera gives truly excellent colour rendition, even under flourescent lighting, and is able to work well in surprisingly low light levels. Viewers of the cam have commented on how clear the picture was. The adjustable focus is a real bonus, and I have already marked the case in pencil to easily let me change between the two best focus adjustments for normal and closeup use. The built-in but easily detached base is adjustable through pan and tilt, and will not change position once set.

The included software is quite a complete package, but my only real complaint is the lack of a customisable install option. I will never use all the stuff that I was forced to load simply to get the minimum drivers to operate under Yahoo Instant Messenger. Intel should know better.

Apart from the 'all or nothing' install process, this camera is a gem. I heartily reccommend it.

For the price the unit is very good. Set up is very easy, although there are a lot of superfluous extras in the software package. Resolution is decent considering the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best buy!, September 10, 2002

This is probably the best buy you can find anywhere. For the price, this particular webcam is a steal. It comes with a bundle of software for video editing, snapshots, and several other softwares conveniently stored on two CD's. This could also turnout as a great gift for those loved ones who are far away from you. The resolution was amazing and it works wonders for single people looking for online webcam chats! Since I bought this product five of my friends have followed my example. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars No Problems Here., June 30, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Intel Deluxe USB Camera (Personal Computers)
I've had this particular model for the last 2 - 3 yrs. and had absolutely no problems with it. It was originally installed in my Windows 98 with no problems whatsoever, and compatable with our new XP. We're still using our 98, so I ordered another one today for the XP(same model). My son has the same model, and had no problems installing his either.
