Intel's PRO/1000 MT dual-port server adapter supports the Gigabit Ethernet industry-wide networking standard with full IEEE 802.3ab compatibility. Further broadening your deployment options, the adapter supports most NOSs. Intel's innovative SingleDriver technology provides a common Gigabit Ethernet driver suite, while the product's backward compatibility with previous generations of Intel PRO/1000 network adapters reduces your support costs and simplifies installation and maintenance.

This flexible, auto-sensing adapter works in a variety of bus types, including 64- or 32-bit PCI-X 1.0 or PCI 2.2 buses. It includes remote-management support (WfM, RIS, SNMP/DMI) as well as Intel's 82546 Gigabit controller with Interrupt Moderation, which ensures high performance, reliability, and low power use.

The adapter's advanced cable diagnostics dynamically tests and reports network problems (error rate, cable length) and automatically compensates for cable issues (cross over cable, wrong pin-out/polarity). And compatibility with the large-send-off-load/TCP segmentation offload feature of Microsoft Windows Server 2003, 2000, and XP means you'll enjoy wire-speed performance with low CPU use.

An advanced, newly expanded server features Intel ANS software, which increases uptime with redundant, teamed connections and scales bandwidth by balancing network traffic across multiple server connections. Switch Fault Tolerance and a Test Switch Configuration test compatibility and maintain uptime. Compatibility with Fast Ethernet reduces training costs and lets you ramp rollout quickly. You'll get Gigabit speeds on Category-5 cable networks without costly cable replacement.

Finally, the adapter's auto-sensing, self-configuring 10/100/1000 Mbps performance permits migration to faster networks easily and inexpensively. The adapter will automatically sense when the network is able to support a faster speed and will self-configure to save IT staff time, money, and server downtime.

Full-height and low-profile, the adapter includes screw-on brackets for easy placement. For installation in high-density 1U and 2U servers with a low-profile PCI, the full-height bracket can be easily swapped out and replaced by a shorter, low-profile bracket (both brackets supplied).

I purchased one of these for use in a VMWare ESXi server; it has worked great. However, the server I purchased it for I couldn't use it in. The PCI-X section of the card is optional, of course; it will work in a regular PCI slot. However, the board I tried first to put it in had a chipset directly beyond the end of the PCI slot and so it couldn't fit. I even considered using a dremel tool to cut off that section of the card, but ultimately just put the card in a different server.

Once in a server that the card fit in (still PCI only, also a VMWare ESXi 4.1 box) it has worked perfectly ever since.

The original NIC I ordered unbeknownest to both parties ended up being a 64Bit PCI/x card. It is for Rack mount 1U servers.

Jim, who handled my account the whole time offered some suggestions. I ended up finding the NIC card that would fit my 32 bit slots, and also purchased a USB 3.0 upgrade PCIx1 card. They responded exceptionally quickly to emails and phone calls. They were lightning fast at getting my replacements to me when we figured out the SKU that would work for me.

I just dropped off my RMA to them for the original card. From what I understand this company handles thousands of electronic parts.

I don't hesistate in the least strongly recommending doing any purchases you can through Online Direct. Thanks again Jim, and I hope you and yours and your colleagues have a wonderful set of holidays if you so celebrate them. gk
