5.0 out of 5 stars Small form factor, quite operation - a great mini-server or virus-free desktop PC, September 16, 2009

This review is from: ASUS Eee Box PC (1.6 GHz Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Linux EZOS) White (Personal Computers)
I've bought over 20 Linux Asus computers (Eee PC and Eee Box) for my own business and my clients. It's an excellent product and can be turned into a nice, quite, small desktop PC or an eco-friendly small workgroup/home server. These babies easily run LAMP stack (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) for web applications and websites. I also use them to run other types of servers: a file server, a network monitor, a time server, a dns server. The small form factor and a quite operation gives this product a unique advantage of a larger and more noisy MSI Wind 160 and such.

As long as Asus makes Linux products and supports FOSS, my clients and I will keep buying and recommending these products.

My clients are very surprised how these Boxes boot so fast each time. ;-) They also loved the Tabbed/Large icons interface that Asus Eee Box Linux edition came with. Everything works out of the box. One client uses this product as its main business computer and loves it. I don't want to sound like a salesperson here, but here is what she wrote me: "Never in my life I had a computer than went running for almost a year and not give me any problem at all, be it software or hardware related. This Linux thing does really work."

For two other clients I had to install Ubuntu, since they needed a bit more functionality that the OS it came with could provide.

Overall, I love this product!

Thank you, ASUS, for making Linux products and giving computer users a choice.

P.S. A small side note - if you are planning to run Windows XP home edition on this product, the performance of Microsoft OS on this platform will be significantly lower than if you run Linux. Especially, after 6-7 months and applying MS updates, the system may start getting a lot slower. I have not tried running Windows 7 on this, but hopefully it will run faster than XP. ;-)
