5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 775 Chip!
I decided to upgrade my E6600 before jumping to Windows 7 this week. The results are amazing. Temps run around 90 degrees F with a Thermaltake MozartTX case (w extra fans) and a Thermaltake hi rise CPU cooler at full load and less than room temperature at idle!

I decided to upgrade my E6600 before jumping to Windows 7 this week. The results are amazing. Temps run around 90 degrees F with a Thermaltake MozartTX case (w extra fans) and a Thermaltake hi rise CPU cooler at full load and less than room temperature at idle!

The main advantage for me was in the encoding speed. I regularly use my PC to encode movies for my Archos 7. With the E6600 I was able to encode full resolution h.264 movies at 1250kbps at 25fps using Handbrake. The Q9650 encodes at 98fps. Simply amazing. A good quick drop-in upgrade for those looking to hold off on a i7 upgrade.

Slapped this chip in a 790i with a Swiftech GTZ water block. It's a lot faster, and cooler then my Q6600, got it stable up to 4.3ghz

4.0 out of 5 stars Great upgrade, November 18, 2010

Great if you have a 775 pin mother board and you want a fast quad core without upgrading your whole system to an I5 or I7 set up.However thats the only scenario where this c.p.u. makes sense, as for the price you can get a much better c.p.u. for the new mother boards types.
In my case I had an ageing dual core that wasn't performing to well on the latest games but I didn't want to buy a new mother board + ram + c.p.u. and go through the hassle of reinstalling two versions of windows plus all my programs. So I just popped this in and was away running in 5 mins. All games run great now and was easy to overclock from standard 3 Ghz to 3.6 Ghz on standard cooler.
So highly reconmended for an upgrade but not at all for a new system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Upgrade For Socket 775 Systems, July 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 Processor 3.0 GHz 12 MB Cache Socket LGA775 (Personal Computers)
Popping in this QUAD was a fast and simple way to upgrade one of our 775 based systems. The speed increase and video rendering times over a Core2 was definitely noticable.

Although the chip is rather expensive for a legacy tech, it was a economical choice because we didn't have to upgrade our MB and DDR2 ram by going with the i7 (1366) platform.

If you have a existing 775 setup and want to give it a boost, i highly recommend picking up one of these chips when they are still available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stable and Strong Processor, April 3, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 Processor 3.0 GHz 12 MB Cache Socket LGA775 (Personal Computers)
2 gripes about this processor: 1 isn't even the processors fault, but Intel, who distributes all their processors with those cheap "push pin" mounts. I would feel a lot better, if I could screw mount the heat sinks onto the board. 2nd gripe, is that this particular version or perhaps batch, has a faulty DTS (Digital Thermal Sensor) problem.. On idle, 2 or 3 cores, actually register at exactly the same temperature, which I'm not even sure, is correct or not. Although, when upon load it starts to show the right temps, I think.
Other than that, Built the whole computer system in 1.5 hours, and been running strong and stable for over 150 hours, crunching animation frames.
It's a bit strange though, in some frames, its 40% faster than my Q6600, but in others, its only 10% faster. I don't know what the deal is there, but maybe, that would explain, why the Q6600 is still valued highly, as a fantastic processor.
And, I never overclock my systems, so that is not a factor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for web developers!, June 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 Processor 3.0 GHz 12 MB Cache Socket LGA775 (Personal Computers)
This processor is amazing. Going from the Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 Processor, 2.5 GHz, 2M L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB, LGA775 to the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0 GHz 12M L2 Cache 1333MHz FSB LGA775 Quad-Core Processor is like going from a skateboard to a Ferrari. I was a little hesitant about the price as compared to the new i7 cores, but it was well worth it when considering I didn't have to upgrade my motherboard and RAM.

The install process was quick and easy. With the Thermaltake Meorb Low Profile CPU Cooler for HTPC Case with 4-Pin PWM Fan - CLP0527 and Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound, 3.5 Grams the processor is running stable at 30-38°C.

I am a website designer and developer running Ubuntu Linux as my primary OS, but unfortunately I must still rely on some Windows-based software. With the virtualization support (and the ability to dedicate cores to the virtual machine) running Windows XP inside Virtualbox with the Q9650 is incredibly fast and smooth. As an added bonus, I have no more problems with running fullscreen Flash video in Linux.

The cpu arrived promptly and in very good shape as I come to expect from Amazon. Although already obsolete in the PC computer component world, it was fine for me to be able to upgrade my computer for a reasonable price as oppose to change the motherboard, buy new memory, and cpu.

5.0 out of 5 stars Last upgrade for LG775, April 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 Processor 3.0 GHz 12 MB Cache Socket LGA775 (Personal Computers)
This is the last upgrade for the LG775 platform. Came from a E7400 C2D and in BFBC2 I saw my frame rates double. That game is multi-threaded. Older games will not see any improvement but the newer ones do. I am happy with my choice.
