Intel Technology
Intel® Wide Dynamic Execution. Enables the delivery of more instructions per clock cycle for shorter execution times and improved energy efficiency—accomplish more simultaneously and with greater efficiency.

Intel® Intelligent Power Capability. Turning off portions of the processor when they aren't being used improves overall energy efficiency and reduces heat production, resulting in a quieter, more energy efficient system.

Intel® Smart Memory Access. Increasing available data bandwidth means more multitasking with less slowdown—run more demanding applications simultaneously and accomplish more in less time.

Intel® Advanced Smart Cache. Placing data closer to the processing cores improves platform responsiveness and performance with a wide range of applications.

Intel® Advanced Digital Media Boost. Accelerates performance with a broad range of applications including video, speech and image, photo processing, encryption, financial, engineering and scientific applications.

Multimedia
With professional-grade photo, music and HD video editing software readily available for consumers, it's becoming increasingly popular to create, edit, and share entertainment with friends and family. Unfortunately, these same applications are notoriously performance hungry. Built to handle the most demanding software, the four cores of this Intel processor help ensure that when you're working with high-resolution photos, exporting your next audio mashup, or editing HD-quality home movies, your computing platform will be able to keep pace with your creative muse.

Multitasking
A computing platform featuring the Intel Core 2 Quad processor maximizes processing efficiency, allowing users to juggle multiple projects in multiple applications without experiencing the slowdown typically seen with traditional single-core processors. As a result, work and creative projects will get done sooner.

Gaming
Next-generation gaming is more than just pretty environments and smooth motion. Behind the incredible visual realism of waterfalls or the unlucky ricochet of a bullet are intense, high-speed calculations of asset streaming, terrain generation, 3D rendering, and physics effects. When running select next-generation games, each of the cores in the Intel Core 2 Quad processor can be dedicated to individual processes, resulting in smoother, more lifelike graphics and further blurring the line between virtual and reality.

This is a quality product. It's packaged well, it installs easily and it works flawlessly. The included thermal solution (heatsink and fan assembly) fits well and keeps the CPU temperature nice and low without making fan noise. The heatsink has factory pre-installed thermal compound, so you don't need any "heatsink grease" during installation.

A few "facts" about this (and other Intel Core 2 Quad) processors:

* Performance speed is better, but not a LOT better than a dual core. This is because most Windows programs only use one core anyway.

* Programs that are written for a multi CPU system (such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom) will be screaming fast when run on this chip.

* A quad core CPU is actually 2 dual cores in one package.

* This CPU is "locked" (it cannot have it's clock multiplier changed for "overclocking").

* To get an "unlocked" CPU, you must buy a $1000+ "Quad Core Extreme" chip (i.e. a QX6700).

* This CPU is not supported by older motherboards. MAKE SURE you have the right board AND BIOS updates to support quad core before buying this.

* LINUX users will LOVE this chip, since Linux smoothly uses all 4 cpu's.

* This chip supports "AMD-64" mode - meaning it will run XP and Vista 64 bit editions, as well as Linux AMD-64 edition.

In summary, this product is high quality and it works great. I highly recommend this CPU as a fine upgrade to any PC (be sure your system supports the chip though!).

Previously, I had a Intel Core 2 Duo running at 2.66 GHz installed in my Dell OptiPlex 745 mini-tower. While it was fast, this just blows it out of the water. WEI scores at 7.2 for the Core 2 Quad.

I use this as a server and it is able to handle tasks at ease compared to the Core 2 Duo. It also has increased my BOINC scores by an incredible amount.

If all you're doing is office work or some Internet browsing, this is overkill. But if you're doing heavy video editing, server work, or anything intense on older hardware, this will fit the bill.

Combine this with a new graphics card and you'll have one impressive machine.

I bought this back in December for about $200 used. Even though the price was a little high I thought it was worth it since I plan on using my Dell Dimension E520 (upgraded from a Pentium D 820) for a few more years than planned. The case for this machine is modelled for Dell's BTX mobos, and will not accept an ATX mobo as a replacement. This is probably the last BTX mobo out there based on the Intel G965 chip, which allows it to support up to this chip as its maximum upgrade (with Dell 2.4.0 BIOS update). You can use Dell's heatsink since it should more than suffice for newer Core 2 CPUs (less heat).

After writing this review, I realized it is as much about the Intel Q6700 process as it is about the Dell Precision Workstation and Dell Support. After some consideration, I'm leaving it this way as one can't separate a processor from its system and still expect either to function.

I bought my Intel Q6700 processor as an upgrade for my Dell Precision 390 workstation around 3 years ago. It has been solid to this point. While the Intel chip comes with a three year warranty, I bought mine from Dell for a Dell system also under warranty. The cool thing about the Dell warranty is if you buy the parts from Dell they will warranty it for as long as the system warranty is good.

So for this review, I've been using this product for quite awhile and without any issues at all. It is a stable and outstanding processor.

I'm using this processor with Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 (64-bit) and with 8 GB of RAM. It supports both multi-processor applications and multiple applications at the same time without any negative issues. Even when I peg the system for hours on the CPU and RAM usage the Intel Q6700 continues to function without any visual issues on heat or incorrect results.

I have yet to see one issue with the processor or the RAM and use it in many different types of applications from games (e.g. GTA III, Final Fantasy XI, to Stardock Systems Galactic Civilization), to video editors, to Visual Studio 2008, to MS-Office 2007, etc. The really great part is the system supports using all of these applications at the same time. (I run the games in a Window and not full screen (except GTA III)). I can run both multiple-processor and multiple applications at the same without any problems from either the system or the Intel Q6700.

After much research on the net I found this processor was a direct replacement for the Duo Core that was in my Dell. After a bios update this chip went right in with no probs whatsoever. Really pleased with its performance

I built myself a C2D 6600 system back in 2006, with the plan to expand if needed.
I now am using applications that can use quad core, and took a gamble on this. I am not disappointed. For the money I spent, I got a chip that looks almost new, and runs flawlessly. I have yet to OC, as it has not given me reason to. I have yet to hit 100% cpu load.

All in all, I got a new machine for just a few bucks, and have easily gotten a few more years out of my 680i motherboard.
