I had my reservations on buying this processor over an i5 or an i7. However, I decided to give this new Haswell chip a chance. I must say that I am very pleased with its performance so far.

I was able to install this CPU without any issues in an Asus Z87 Pro motherboard. I did install an aftermarket cooler, since my experience with OEM coolers has never been pleasant. We keep our home at around 70 degrees (21 celsius) and the CPU with the cooler idles at 82-86 degrees (28-30 celsius). I haven't yet measured the temps under load.

My doubts with this i3 revolved around how well it would be for gaming. So, I installed Skyrim and modded it with some moderate graphical improvements, set it at Ultra at 1080p and loaded the game. All I can say is it is smooth! No stuttering, No lag, it plays wonderfully. I couldn't be happier.

Netflix, Hulu+, Amazon Instant Video, etc all play without a hiccup. Compression software, Web browsers, Productivity apps are all snappy and smooth.

If you are looking for a good mid range processor...This is it! Get it! You won't be disappointed.

This puppy does everything I needed and more. I paired it with a MSI 760 and it has chewed up everything I've thrown at out with any drop off. I'm playing Battlefield 4 with all ultra settings, GuildWars 2 with everything maxed out, etc. I record lots of gameplay and do editing and this CPU has been everything I wanted and more. Great value and great performance.

This is a great little processor for the money and is much faster than you might expect, and it only puts out 54W. I put together an "econobox" system with this processor, a Biostar Z87X 3D motherboard, and 8 Gb of Team Vulcan memory and they were all on sale for under 280. I had an extra case/power supply, a SSD, and also a Radeon HD 7770 graphics card to complete the build. They all work great together without any problems and there's almost no heat coming out of this. Even though this is a dual core, with the 4 threads it acts almost like a quad core giving it a good price/performance ratio.

I ran it for a while initially on the integrated 4400 graphics and it was fine for everything up to medium gaming, and it makes a nice backup should the graphics card bite the dust. The stock cooling fan and heat sink are suitable for a low power processor like this and there is no need to go with an after market cooler like you would with an I5 or I7 chip so that makes the real difference in price even greater between this and an I5/I7, and this processor goes on sale regularly if you check around.

Overall this is a very capable processor, and when teamed with a graphics card it can perform quite well on a lot of games, and it doesn't even break a sweat surfing the net or streaming an HD video.

I am using this in conjunction with an ASROCK Z87E-ITX - LGA1150 Intel Z87 Chipset DDR3 SATA3 USB3.0 WiFi Mini-ITX Motherboard and the performance is great. This processor is literally at the low end of i3 processors listed as compatible for that board, but this gives me far more power than I need for the HTPC I'm using it in.

Back when Windows 7 was in beta, I bought a new MB with advanced features that weren't supported in older versions of Windows. So I needed a new processor at the time and went with a Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 Processor, which was far from low end. It was 75% more expensive than what this one costs now and this one outperforms it. While this is still a lower end processor, the fact that it can outperform a processor from a few years ago, with power to spare and better graphics capability, means that you can have something that's far more than an entry level PC with it. It used to be that a lower end Intel processor meant saving money by compromising. But depending on your needs, it might give you as much as you can throw at it. For real world applications in daily use, I get more performance out of the PC with this processor than I get out of my laptop with an i7. You need to go by your system as a whole.

If you run the types of applications that truly need more power, you will know what they are and wouldn't be looking at this one.

Price is good for what you get. Dual core with hyper threading.
Installed on a MSI B85M G-43 Motherboard. G. Skill 8GB Ripjaws (2 Sticks) PC-3 12800.
Using the included heatsink and fan. Intel HD 4400 Graphics does a good job for basic computing.
Didn't build this system for gaming, so I can't comment on gaming characteristics. If you need
a CPU for email, surfing the web and office apps, this CPU will be just great. I built a similar system
using a I5 with the same components and can't tell the difference.
