The Intel Core i7-950 processor delivers unmatched performance for demanding tasks. View larger.Powerful New Microarchitecture Eliminates Slowdown
The i7 family is Intel's flagship processor, and for good reason. With the i7 family, Intel engineers invented a revolutionary new style of microarchitecture. They replaced the front side bus -- a longtime staple of processor design -- with a new technology called QuickPath Interconnect (QPI). Using QPI, the Intel Core i7-950 processor achieves unprecedented levels of bandwidth, and can use its four computing cores to their maximum potential.
To put it simply, users will enjoy faster and more streamlined processing than ever before. Your computer will handle multiple projects and applications without the slowdown you'd experience with a lesser processor.
Extremely intensive programs like high-definition media editors will run more smoothly and responsively. And you'll be able to experience next-generation games without frame-rate hiccups and slowdowns.
New Technologies Boost Performance
The Intel Core i7-950 processor also makes use of several other cutting-edge technologies:
- Turbo Boost Technology allows the processor to run up to 133 MHz faster when it's operating below power/thermal limits.
- Hyper-threading Technology enables more efficient use of processor resources, making the most of highly threaded software like media players and next-generation games.
- Smart Cache Memory increases available RAM resources, leading to less lag while multi-tasking.
Whether editing high-definition videos, touching up family photos, or splicing up music, the Intel Core i7-950 processor provides the processing power needed. The processor's four cores are optimized to keep up with the most advanced digital editing software. It also accelerates DVD encoding and compression, allowing you to easily share your HD home videos with everyone.
Unparalleled Gaming Performance
With the advent of next-generation games, PC gaming is more immersive than ever. The latest games take advantage of multi-threaded programming, allowing for more realistic graphics, physics, and artificial intelligence (AI). But you need more than just a good graphics card with high GPU output to fully experience all these effects. Underlying the visual realism and advanced AI scripts are thousands of high-speed calculations that your CPU must process.
Fortunately, the Intel Core i7-950 processor is specifically designed to handle these calculations. Using multi-thread architecture, it has the ability to process thousands of graphical characteristics at once, resulting in a smooth and lag-free experience. Intel worked closely with CryTek -- the developers of the advanced game engine behind such games as Crysis and Far Cry -- to guarantee that gamers have an immersive and lifelike experience.
The Intel Core i7-950 processor is backed by a three-year limited warranty.

For every processor series there is a sweet spot. It is that CPU that is at cutting edge of technology, gives outstanding performance and is just at the bottom of the high end price scale. Any higher price you pay buys you only small and diminishing increases in performance (well and perhaps the admiration of the gaming crowd). This is currently that sweet spot processor. It has all the speed you need for MS Office, web browsing and even high end games with the right video configuration. Not even nosey old Norton bogs it down. I put Windows 7 on a 60 GB solid state hard drive and the machine boots in less than 30 seconds. I process a lot of multi-picture panoramas in Photoshop and they take just seconds compared to minutes on my last machine. This processor will cost just a few dollars more than a 920 but you will get considerably better performance. A machine built around this thing should be future-proof for at least four years. Here is my complete configuration. Build this and you will profit from almost two months of comparison shopping to get the most machine for the buck. The processor comes with a fan but the Cooler Master Hyper 212 is worth the extra bucks to assure the longevity of the processor.

Was it worth the upgrade? Yes, for three reasons: one, it runs cooler as I said, two, it runs noticably faster even stock, and three, I sold the 920 on Amazon for two hundred bucks (cooler was untouched and I had the box and everything). So all that makes it worth it.
Reference for measuring speed: the 950 running stock with 12GB ram and an EVGA GeForce GTX470 Superclocked 1280 MB DDR5 PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card 012-P3-1472-AR gets me 70+ FPS with Flight Sim X and most scenery turned up, and gets me real-time video editing with Premiere Pro CS5 and Canon 5D Mark II footage, NO rendering. Nice! FYI, my OS drive is a Western Digital 300 GB VelociRaptor SATA 10,000 RPM 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Enterprise Hard Drive WD3000HLFS , and I have a couple other drives to spread programs and scenery around, hence the good performance.
Hope that helps if you're planning an upgrade or a new build!
Delivery is also fast considering I'm in the middle east. Only took 10 days of waiting, which is way ahead of their projected delivery date.
Here's my current build. I ordered most of my stuff here in Amazon.

We reviewed benchmark tests before deciding on the Intel Core i7 compared to the latest AMD, and while there were not big differences, the Intel did show to be a bit faster. Despite the price different (AMD was more cost-efficient), I went with the Intel, and I am very pleased.
As I said, I am not technical, but I can say the setup was easy, install was a breeze, and the computer is a powerhouse. The heat sink that comes with the processor is sufficient if you are not overclocking, and meets my needs. I'm not a gamer, but my machines get heavy use.
Go with the Intel, you won't be dissappointed!
