First, in order to make it fly my son had to run behind the helicopter holding the remote over his head, pointing it at the helicopter. As soon as the helicopter was out of range (about three feet away) it would fall to the ground. Unfortunately, in addition to the paltry range of the remote, this toy has a major design flaw in that its structure isn't sturdy enough to withstand falling to the ground. Within an hour it fell to the ground and the propeller broke off from inside the helicopter. If you're into wasting your money go ahead and buy this, if not, I'd say keep looking.

DONT BUY THIS ONE! We purchased a very similar "UFO" toy for my 2 year on in Hamleys... and it worked great... when that finaly broke (after about 2 weeks) I searched for a replacement... and found this (for cheap)... however its obviously deferctive... I purchased 3 and all three broke instantly after 1 or 2 flights. Not worth the hassle returning cause they were so cheap.... which I think is how they make their money... because if you look at the product closely its obvious that it has a much weaker constructions.

Also.. beware the seller... I have purchased 2 different products from them with the same exact results... they sell very very cheap products that look very similar to their better counterparts. They make their money off of these cheap devices in hopes of people, like me, that dont bother to return them when they break.

This made a great Christmas gift for my brother. Fun,durable and extremly entertaining. Lots of fun inside and outside the house Everyone should get one.

I bought three of these from Woot as gifts for my some of my nieces and nephews. I opened one and have been playing with it all night. It's FUN.

Yes, you can't direct it -- you can only provide more power to increase the lift or decrease it. But it's fascinating to try to affect the flight. It's non-intuitive and very educational.

It's survived a number of crashes. The key is to power it up and let it go from your hand. Takeoffs and landings are hard. Dropping it into your hand is the best landing, I think.

I thought you'd be able to steer it around the room but it only goes up and down. So that kind of sucks.

DO NOT do business with HobbyTron!!! Here is my experience with this company...

1) I purchased a remote control truck from HobbyTron on 11/27/2010. This was my son's Christmas present so I ordered it well in advance in case any issues came up.

2) I received the truck on 12/6/2010 and followed the directions and charged the battery overnight. I plugged it in and no response what so ever.

3) I called HobbyTron on 12/7/2010 (waited 20 minutes for a human to answer). I asked if they could charge my credit card for another one, let me send this back, and then they could credit my credit card when they received the non-working truck. They said they could not do that. They DO NOT provide refunds. They told me I would have to fill out a RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) on their website and I would have to send it back to them to have it fixed and returned. They said there was no way I would get it before Christmas.

4) I filled out a RMA on their website and a few days later I received an e-mail saying they were shipping out a new battery and charger. So, their RMA means nothing to them. They just assumed it was the battery or charger (Even though I told them the battery was warm when charging). I figured we can at least try it...

5) One week passed and no battery or charger in the mail. I called and they said it was "in the process of being shipped". Another week passes and I called. They said "Well, it is coming from oversees so it may take a while". I told them that I would be disputing the charge on my credit card and they HUNG UP ON ME!!!

6) I disputed the charge on my credit card and will have to wait up to two months before it is resolved.

Here is my advice:
1) DO NOT do business with HobbyTron.
2) Go to your local Hobby store and fork out the extra money and get a good remote control car. I did this and paid $185 for an extremely durable car (Traxxas Stampede) and the Hobby store will fix the car if it ever breaks for $30 per hour. That assurance alone was worth it to me. The hobby store people know what sucks and what does not. HobbyTron almost destroyed my son's Christmas, but the local hobby store made him happy...

This is an awesome little toy. Quick to charge and setup. Easy to use. Our 5 year old had a blast with it. There is no control other than up and down, but the helicopter stabilizes itself pretty well. However, if you take off with it a bit sideways or it gets bumped during flight it can go out of control. When this happens it isn't uncommon for the remote to loose site of the helicopter (it is IR, not RF) which means the helicopter doesn't receive the signal to shut down and just keeps flying until it smashes into something. While it is pretty durable (more durable than it looks) I think breakage is inevitable unless you have a very careful pilot. Our first one lasted through about 8 days of very heavy use, but it was still worth every penny and our second is on order.
