4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of good info -- if a bit out of date, August 8, 2002

This review is from: The Intelligent Businessman's Guide to Japan (Paperback)
I'm on my fourth trip to Japan in a few weeks; the trips have all been in support of a business relationship with a Japanese company that my company started about one year ago.

That said, the book provides lots of good information about manners, behavior, and social context for the Japan of the 1980's/1990's. The Japan of the 1980's/1990's is very different from the Japan of 2001-2002, but on the plus side, the manners and information in the book provide a can't-go-wrong baseline.

Also, the book is thin enough to read on the flight over.

It's definitely worth the money, and I haven't found an equivalent book with more up-to-date information.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dated and academic, June 28, 2000
By

This review is from: The Intelligent Businessman's Guide to Japan (Paperback)
This book is copyright 1990. In preparing for a 2nd trip to Japan, it clearly seems dated. Almost no account for the fact that the Japanese will take into account the fact that your from the west. Also, the book speaks from an academic background. The references are primarily other acadamecians. The author does not appear to speak from experience.

Regardless of this, there is still valuable information here.
