Great Idea, Moderate Execution,

This review is from: The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow - Acting Edition (Paperback)
A serviceable play with an inconsistent through line of audience narration that never really pays off. The lead character (Jenny) is interesting and the conceit that she can build a robot double of herself is allowable. The trouble arises with her relationships with other characters, most notably her mother -- a frustrating caricature of the working power mother a la Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl. The issues with dialogue and character would probably be smoothed over tremendously on stage by good actors and direction, but on the page it isn't as funny as it should be, and not moving at all. Still, some fresh ideas and an interesting topic: What are the longer term implications of the American adoption of thousands of unwanted Chinese baby girls?

I brought this play because I thought it was going to be funny. However, it wasn't. At the very least, not as humorous as I thought it was going to be. After reading the synopsis, i had it in my mind as some story that talked about hte hilarious adventures of this girl and her robot look-a-like, but it's not. Instead, it's a deep insightful story about a girl that wants to meet her birth mother and has agoraphobia and problems with her mother. It actually gets quite emotional at times. This play also contains a lot of expletives and is very sex-oriented. So it may not be a kid-friendly play to read (I had thought it was).

You know how most poeple say they wish they could give something no stars but the site wont let them? Well, I'm not going to say that. Instead, I am going to say that I wish I coudl take this off the website, but the site won't let me. This was a horrible play, BUT the cover does not claim to be a play, so I give 1 star. It claims to be an instante message. It was not instant enough. Even a flying robot can't save a crappy play. Like Dying City, I on;y hope that these plays are part of some new style that no one has classified yet-otherwise this is just poor poor writing.
