4.0 out of 5 stars How to get the most from your M&A efforts, January 13, 2009
This review is from: Intelligent M&A: Navigating the Mergers and Acquisitions Minefield (Hardcover)
This book is a not about the details of mergers and acquisitions, but in creating and implementing your M&A strategy. As you know, most mergers and acquisitions fare poorly. This is often because only the technical aspects of the deal were considered. You need to also think through how combining the companies will help you implement your strategy rather than distracting from it. How will your corporate cultures combine? Where does the deal create value? Does the deal provide your company with skills you need to become better at your core competency?

You need to systematize the process and develop a sound M&A checklist that you follow to identify deals that make sense. Don't do a deal based on management ego or because of some fantasy someone developed at a cocktail party after a few too many highballs.

There are times you also need to think through things from the defensive side. Does being acquired make sense? How can you defend against a deal that will end up destroying value for stakeholders and your customers?

I very much appreciate the emphasis the authors place on the learning that can come from post acquisition reviews. You need to learn from your failures and successes so that every deal becomes better than the last.

A very interesting book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Instructive guide to better M&A through better thinking, January 12, 2009
This review is from: Intelligent M&A: Navigating the Mergers and Acquisitions Minefield (Hardcover)
Scott Moeller and Chris Brady provide an insightful guide on how to be smarter about M&A. Not only do they remind you of everything that should be involved in the process, they help you think through your situation and determine how to avoid stepping on all the lurking landmines. Most mergers and acquisitions do not live up to expectations, and some actually destroy both companies. This happens when the urge to make the deal overcomes good sense and short circuits the use of sensible information. This book helps you ensure that you are pursuing the right deals. The authors provide sound advice on how to gather intelligence, how to use it to evaluate and negotiate the best deals, and how to learn from every deal - whether you close it or not. getAbstract finds their book thoughtful, easy to read and wonderfully concise.

4.0 out of 5 stars The right way toward M&A, February 6, 2009
This review is from: Intelligent M&A: Navigating the Mergers and Acquisitions Minefield (Hardcover)
Few people would argue that the toughest job in nearly every organization resides within the sales department. However, there is a wide performance variance that separates the slugs and superstars along the sales spectrum. When you consider that a top-sales producer may generate four times the gross revenue of their closest colleague, it's easy to see why billions are spent each year trying to find the secret necessary to duplicate that success. Author Derek Gatehouse took up that challenge and interviewed more than 2,000 executives to uncover the formula for extreme sales success. In his resulting book titled The Perfect Sales Force, Gatehouse offers six critical practices that the best sales teams have in common. These best-in-class practices alone are worth much more than the price of the book. But Gatehouse expertly enlarges them to help sales managers identify and assess those intangible attributes that drive successful sales, which is why Soundview recommends this read. If you need to jumpstart your sales team, you need to get this book.
