Korsch, a founder and the first chair of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association in 1953, has nearly 50 years of experience in medicine and a long-standing interest in doctor-patient communication. Here she has worked with science writer Harding to compose a guide for patients wishing to improve their interactions with physicians. Their book contains a tremendous amount of useful information, exploring not only the mechanisms but also the causes of poor communication between doctors and patients. Both sides of the problem are stressed, but the authors have an unfortunate tendency to place most of the responsibility for the solution on the patient. More information on what is being done in medical education to improve doctors' communication skills would have benefited this book. Nonetheless, it is an excellent resource for readers who wish to understand and communicate better with their doctors. Good, advanced book for the patient who has developed some frustration with our styles of interacting in healthcare.
Strengths: Very detailed, well laid out, rich with useful information.
Weaknesses: Somewhat long, lacking clear chapter outlines or simplified summaries.
