"My idea was to write concise, illustrated, how-to books on classic games such as poker and blackjack. The fast pace of these games and the non-verbal communication that characterizes casino play intimidate most beginners. Books on strategies are numerous, but often long, poorly organized, and complex. Success claims are the results of professional gamblers with heavy bankrolls that can absorb large swings in cash flow, a situation rarely applicable to a typical recreational gambler. My writing goals were twofold. First explain exactly what recreational gamblers should know, do and expect before they sit down to play. Second, clearly articulate the concepts behind correct play to give both beginners and experienced players a framework for understanding the extensive but often rambling literature on advanced strategies. I set out to write compact guidebooks, no more than 40 pages each, that would retail for about $5 and be easy to carry and refer to on a casino trip.
I wrote two manuscripts, INTELLIGENT BLACKJACK and INTELLIGENT POKER: TEXAS HOLD’EM. Each book adhered to a common format. It is hard to imagine a [price] book being overpriced, but this one is. If you have never played Hold'em at any level, this MAY be a place to start, but even for that it is totally inadequate. There are dozens of better choices available. Save your money.

Great Overview for Beginners and Experienced Players,

This is an outstanding overview of Texas Hold'em poker. I wish I had read it before reading longer books on the game. Braids provides a compact and clear explanation of Hold'em and the thought processes needed for each stage of a hand. His discussion of the five decision factors is actually applicable to all forms of poker. The charts and illustrations are helpful. More complex books on Hold'em make much more sense after reading Braid's book. Also if you play poker online, having the chart on page 22 taped above your computer screen is helpful for knowing when to stay in a hand after the flop.

Darn, couldn't get a royal flush this hand... guess I'll have to settle for FOUR ACES!!!
