Congdon & Weed, dist. by Contemporary Bks. Jul. 1986. c.768p. maps. index. ISBN 0-86553-158-7. $35. trav A bit hefty in size to tuck away in one's carry-on bag as well as a little "pricey," this is, nonetheless, essential for anyone going to Scotland. This companion volume to the Intelligent Traveller's Guide to Historic Britain (1983) is organized in a similar fashiona 250-page narrative history and a gazetteer. Places mentioned in the gazetteer appear in bold-face print in the history section. The gazetteer is divided into seven geographic divisions from southwest to north and subdivided by county (pre-1973 names). Page references given for each site refer to the narrative history section. Scotland's multitudinous islands are included. For those who have time only for highlights, the section "The Best of Scotland" is excellent. There is also an extensive bibliography. A four-star effort. Paula M. Zieselman, Sarah Lawrence Coll. Lib., Bronxville, N.Y.
