Product Description
Kids Learn to Read
Learning to read is fun!

Featured at the Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco, Kids Learn to Read is the latest child-pleasing addition to Intellijoy's best-selling reading curriculum series, and is preceded by our Kids ABC Letters and Kids ABC Phonics apps. Already downloaded by over half a million parents, this app's popularity is continuing to grow and it is now available on the Amazon Appstore for Android.

Kids Learn to Read is a delightful game that invites preschool-aged children to practice blending sounds together to read and spell such simple words as "dog," "sun," and "big."

In its three sections, children get to:

  • Learn to blend letter sounds into words by moving Tommy the Turtle across the letter bridge as each letter is sounded out and a word is formed and pronounced. Your kids can hand Tommy a skateboard to make him go faster as they become comfortable with blending the sounds.
  • Have fun practicing elementary reading as they are asked to fit Tommy's animal friends with skateboards and helmets.
  • Make words in a way that's fun by turning real-looking blocks with letters on each side until the word is spelled out.

The idea behind this app is good. This app helps students sound out words. Unfortunately, there is no rhyme or reason to the order the words are presented. Going from "cat" to "mint" to "way" is a pretty big jump for beginning readers. As a special education teacher, one approach I have found to be successful is teaching word families (e.g. the "at" family -- cat, hat, bat, mat, fat, etc). This app misses the boat on building familiar word patterns. You are better off sticking with some of the free or 99 cent word family apps. Also, my grandson and I never found the reward screen (if there is one). Young students need frequent rewards (like stars, or dinosaurs, or rockets) after every four or five words. Even with me showering him with praise, he lost interest in a few minutes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great App for Hands on Learning January 23, 2012

My stepson was having issues with reading and I've come to learn that he is more of a hands on learner. He wasn't getting something unless it was drilled into his head over and over which was making reading really un-enjoyable. I wanted to get something that would teach him to sound out the words letter by letter instead of guessing at the word which was always a guess from right field. This app has really got him into sounding letters out and I still get the guesses from time to time. We've been using the app for four days now (30 min a day) and I already see an improvement. He has started to recognize some of the words without having to sound them out letter by letter so it's great! I would like to see a wider word bank... hopefully an update *hint hint* would be nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Had to have July 8, 2012

This is an amazing app. At $4.00 it was more than I usually will pay but after watching my grandchild sound out one word after another and to read simple words at 4 year old I know it was worth twice what I spent on it

Perfect for new readers. My kindergartener found this to be fun. It comes with 3 different games. I would not recommend this to kids any older.

2.0 out of 5 stars learning, if they don't get bored December 6, 2011

Cute graphics, but for $3.99 I expected more. My 7 year old beginning reader quickly tired of this app. It may be better for younger children. I recommend, instead, alphabet car.
