WD Purple 4 TB Surveillance Storage.

WD Purple Surveillance Storage is built for 24/7, always-on, high-definition surveillance security systems that use up to eight hard drives and up to 32 cameras.

WD Purple

Improve performance with AllFrame.
WD Purple surveillance-class hard drives are equipped with AllFrame technology which works with ATA streaming to reduce frame loss, improve playback and increases the number of drive bays supported. AllFrame reduces video interruptions that commonly occur when desktop hard drives are incorrectly used as storage in security systems. Missed frames and lost footage is a serious problem when an event occurs and surveillance footage needs to be retrieved. WD Purple with AllFrame provides the confidence you should expect when it's time to play back and review critical surveillance footage.

Key benefits:

  • Reduces video frame loss with surveillance-class storage
  • Specifically tuned for surveillance security systems
  • Caching algorithms are tuned for write-intensive, low bit rate, high stream count applications that are typical of surveillance applications
  • Priority change for write allocations and preemptive caching policies
  • TLER & ATA streaming support
  • Supports up to eight drives

Features

Engineered for compatibility - WD Purple surveillance hard drives are built for compatibility with industry-leading chassis and chip set manufacturers for seamless integration into your new or existing video surveillance system. Check out our compatibility selector to find out what surveillance drive is right for you.

Optimized performance for up to 32 HD cameras - WD Purple hard drives are optimized to support up to 32 high-definition surveillance cameras, giving you the flexibility to upgrade and expand your security system in the future.

Lower power consumption - Low power consumption is crucial in high-temperature always-on surveillance environments. With exclusive IntelliSeek technology, WD Purple drives calculate the optimum seek speeds which lowers power consumption, noise and vibration that can damage and cause desktop drives to wear out more quickly. When you invest in a premium surveillance-class drive you worry less while enjoying the benefits over a longer period of time.

Ideal for:

  • Security systems that want 24/7 surveillance reliability
  • Surveillance security systems using PVR, DVR, NVR recorders.
  • Security applications that require reduce error pixilation and video interruptions
  • Surveillance-class storage performance that use up to eight hard drives and up to 32 cameras.

First of all, I knew from the start that I was going to buy a WD drive. Of my past 30 consumer grade hard drives, all of my WD drives lasted until I decided to take them out of service for larger drives. This compared to the two Hitachi and two Seagate drives that either developed bad sectors or component level failures.

It was really a toss up between WD Red and WD Purple for me. I wanted to try the new drive out and have been pleased thus far. One key factors in my choice to purchase this drive was that it supported TLER. I don't currently have it in a RAID, but I didn't want to limit myself.

Gary E Peterson said it best in his WD Red review explaining TLER, "Time Limited Error Recovery - where the hard drive assumes it is part of an array, assumes there is redundancy, and is not afraid to quickly tell the host controller that it just can't complete the current I/O request."

Both WD Red and Purple have TLER. They both have 3 year warranty. Red has a listed MTBF of 1,000,000 hours and Purple is not listed. Purple is rated for 300,000 load/unload cycles vs Red's 600,000 cycles. Purple edges out Red in noise, 26 dBA vs 28 dBA while seeking.

This drive is very new to the market and my drive bay. :-) I will update my review after a while of using the hard drive.

It's mainly touted for security camera's which will tend to write and overwhrite continuiously. So, if you are using this as a data, streaming music, video source, this is the perfect drive. My Apple TV seems to buffer videos with this 2-4x faster than my WD Blacks.

It's my first one, but I intend to buy a number of these to consolidate the 40-50 HDD's have with 320-500GB capacity sitting on a shelf because it's not practical to have that many small drives hooked to a limited number of SATA ports.

Did I mention the fantastic read/write "real world" speeds...

After 2 weeks of 24/7 use it has become corrupt or unreadable. I am currently doing a full length reformat and hope that resolves the issues. Otherwise I will be returning this and going back to Seagate.

On first looking at these drives from the outside, there isn't a lot to look at with the drive. It's a 3.5-inch form factor SATA drive that isn't much different physically from the WD Green or WD Red products. The WD Purple hard drives offer low power consumption and advanced performance features usually only reserved for enterprise-level storage and are optimized to withstand the demands of always-on digital PVR, DVR and NVR recording environments. With ATA streaming support, WD's `AllFrame' technology helps to reduce video footage loss and to help improve data flow and playback. The only only other HD maker tailoring a drive for this market is Seagate, but their product is yet to be launched - at the time of writing this review.

Another built-in feature that helps guide installers on which Western Digital HDD model works best with a given system. As an example if choose 4TB drive and offers up to 32TB of capacity when configured with the maximum drive count of eight. In RAID 5, that would drop to 28TB of redundant storage. According to Western Digital's Capacity Selector tool, that is enough for 16 cameras recording at 1080p with 12 frames per second and storing a months worth footage.
However it is important to note, in larger systems with eight or more drives, Western Digital recommends either a Se or Re product taken from the enterprise product line up. The new Purple, like the Red model for NAS products, is a lower price unit designed for smaller systems that do not require the full array of enterprise features. So for small DVR builders this is probably the way to go, as it takes the guess work out of which hard drivers to select.

Key benefits:

1. Reduces video frame loss with surveillance-class storage.

2.

Pros: Performance. This is the best-performing mechanical drive I have ever tested. I have four other mechanical HDDs dating back to 2005, including three other Western Digital drives, and this is the best performer across the board. It even beats my old SSD in terms of sequential writes and random writes (likely due to the on-demand nature of TRIM in the SSD):

Western Digital WD1003FZEX: 1000 GB, 7200 RPM, this review
187.01 MB/s sequential read
184.54 MB/s sequential write
60.89 MB/s random read
109.23 MB/s random write

Seagate ST3000DM001: 3000 GB, 7200 RPM, purchased 2012
181.42 MB/s sequential read
178.97 MB/s sequential write
50.22 MB/s random read
90.35 MB/s random write

Western Digital WD20EARS: 2000 GB, 5400 RPM, purchased 2011
112.32 MB/s sequential read
107.88 MB/s sequential write
31.34 MB/s random read
56.34 MB/s random write

Western Digital WD3200AAKS: 320 GB, 7200 RPM, purchased 2007
76.86 MB/s sequential read
75.57 MB/s sequential write
33.68 MB/s random read
43.90 MB/s random write

Western Digital WD2500KS: 250 GB, 7200 RPM, purchased 2005
63.55 MB/s sequential read
62.52 MB/s sequential write
31.32 MB/s random read
38.16 MB/s random write

Intel SSDSA2M080G2GC: 80 GB, purchased 2009
253.07 MB/s sequential read
81.98 MB/s sequential write
196.70 MB/s random read
39.61 MB/s random write

Noise. This drive is very quiet. I don’t have any empirical data for noise, but the hard drive activity never became audible above the hum of the CPU fan in my desktop.

Heat. This drive is very cool for such a high-performing 7200 RPM drive.
