1982 Again.,
By The Groove (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Intellivision Greatest Hits (CD-ROM)
Intellivision's Greatest Hits is a dream come true for kids of the 1980s who had the video game back in the day. Designed for your personal computer, it has 25 of the Intellevision games featuring the original graphics and sounds. The only difference between this software and the original is that you can now play the games on the computer. Everything else is exactly the same. In today's PlayStation era, younger kids might turn their nose at these games and call them "dated" and "cheesy," and to some extent, they're right. But while the graphics may be crude, these games were, and still are, fun to play and are extremely addictive. All you need to do is insert the CD into your drive and use the menu to pick the game you want to play. It will then display the instructions and will indicate which keys to use on your keyboard to play (you cannot use your mouse). My favorites are "Astrosmash" (this one is among the most popular and will have you hooked in no time), "Night Stalker" (one of my favorites!), and "Space Armada." You also have games from the Intellivoice series including "B-17 Bomber" and "Space Spartans." Disappointingly, Intellivision's Greatest Hits also omits a few such as "Lock-n-Chase" and "Pitfall" due to, I assume, copyright reasons. But in addition to 25 games is a gallery of the original commercials that advertise Intellivision. If these commercials don't do anything else, they show what a long way we've come in terms of technology. When my original Intellevision finally broke in 1990, I thought I'd never play these games ever again. Now, thanks to this game, I can re-live 1982 all over again. Definitely recommended for video game freaks and for anyone who owned Intellivision.

I recently bought the TechnoSource "Collection in a Controller" Intellivision system and was greatly disappointed. So I picked up this collection for the PC and was much happier. It ran flawlessly, seems to have all the music and options and levels that the original games had, unlike the TechnoSource unit.I'd definitely recommend this to any classic game fan.

I picked this up at "$5 and under" store. My first disappointment was that the box claims the software is compatible with Mac OS X -- but it really only runs using OS 9 "classic mode". If you don't have OS 9 installed as well (I don't), this will not work under OS X. (Unfortunately, this is a problem with a lot of older Mac software).
Anyway -- I installed it on a Windows laptop. It runs, but you need to use the keyboard to play the games. The original Intellivision had a hand-held numeric keypad and thumb-wheel joystick; most keyboards -- especially laptop keyboards -- just aren't up to the task of duplicating this. A few of the games work well under this constraint (Astrosmash, Space Armada,), but most don't. I was also stumped by a few games (notable Poker and Blackjack) that seem to get stuck waiting for input from "Player 2". I was forced to kill the app a few times to go back and read the directions (which are not available while playing!)
